Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Ectopic Pregnancy

I am so very sad to be here. My bloodwork showed excellent beta levels but when I went in for an ultrasound, there was nothing to be found. Since then, my betas have continued to increase. I was diagnosed as an ectopic pregnancy and I felt like a train hit me. I chose the route of Methotrexate and it doesn't seem like it is working. My Dr has since informed me that they may have to resort to surgery to locate and remove the pregnancy. The surgery aspect frightens me, b/c they are still uncertain about the location of the pregnancy.

Has anyone else experienced an ectopic pregnancy?  It is so frustrating to still feel pregnant and know that it is only a matter of time before it is over. And at the same time I have to worry about internal bleeding, rupturing tubes, etc... I feel like I cannot grieve the loss b/c there is so much physical drama to deal with.

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy

  • I had one in September and had my right tube removed. I chose Methotrexate as well, but it didn't work (they gave it to me too late). I know it is nerve-wracking, but I'd encourage you to go ahead and get the surgery. It is better than rupture, which is what happened to me.

Please keep us updated. I'm sure they told you that EPs are nothing to mess around with.

  • I'm so sorry.  I had surgery for an ectopic in February and I know that feeling of having great beta levels and then not being able to locate anything on an ultrasound.  It is very scary but even more scary if your tube ruptures.  Please get the surgery so that you can stay healthy.  Best of luck to you.

  • I'm so sorry.  I've had 2 ectopics.  I chose methotrexate also.  Luckily it worked for me, I know it doesn't always.  Are they repeating your betas to make sure they go down to zero?

  • I chose the lap and D&C and had them last Friday.

I had an early loss before and used the Methotrexate (I think, it's been 16 months) in pill form and didn't want to go through it again.

I'm probably not the best one to give advice because I'm still going through it.  Today is my 29th birthday and I'm miserable.  I just want to crawl in a hole and die.  I'm sorry you have to go through this too.

I wasn't worried about choosing the surgery because it is a surgery they do all the time and I trusted my doctor.  He was doing an emergency one on Thursday and one more before mine on Friday.  Looking back, the shot may have been okay to take, I just couldn't bring myself to do it and the experience I had with the hospital was more than enough to make me realize that was what I was meant to do.  The nurses were phenomenal and I was well taken care of.

Like I said, I'm sorry you're going through this.  PM me if you need to talk more.

  • I'm so sorry you are having to go through this. I had an ectopic in Late February/early March. I did not have the option of the metho as my left tube had already started to rupture. I had emergency surgery to remove my left tube 7 weeks ago today.

It is a lot of physical drama to deal with, however, ectopic pregnancies can be extremely dangerous. I hope the shot works for you, however, the surgery for me was not that bad (and I'm a huge wuss). The emotional part was much harder than the physical.  Please keep us updated and I will be thing about you. feel free to pm.

My beta from the fourth day after the shot came back at 20,400 which was frighteningly high and why they brought up surgery.  I go in for a last beta tomorrow and once those results come in, my Dr will decide the next step.

To put it less than eloquently, this sucks.

  • I hope the shot works and the # starts decreasing.  I'm sure you're trying to prevent surgery.  Wishing you the best in this hard time.

  • My ectopic was in Jan, and I ended up getting 2 shots of methotrexate.  My levels kept going up, so that's why I got the 2nd shot.  The day of the 2nd shot, my tube burst and I had emergency surgery.  Just please listen to your body and if something doesn't feel right, call your doc.  I wish I wouldn't have messed around with the 2nd shot and just had the surgery.  Although my tube was probably too far gone to be saved.

Anyway, I'm sorry for your loss.  I also hated feeling pg, knowing that there was no way it could be saved.  Just know that there's nothing you can do but take care of yourself right now.
