So I am going to throw a 40th Bday party for DH. I do not want to spend a ton of $$. I was thinking of having it at our house (catered food and alcohol). Or should I have it at a sports bar and just do appetizers? Thanks gals!
Why would it be cheaper to have catered food and alcohol at your house than to just do it at a sports bar? To do it at home you have to clean up, and then there's the charge for the caterers delivering the stuff, plus you need to over-buy the alcohol so you don't run out, then you have all the mess afterward. why not just pick a sports bar with a private room and buy heavy appetizers and drinks for everyone?
I think it depends on your situation. Is your husband a homebody who prefers to have people over and relax or does he like to go out and hang out with people?
I'd go with whichever you think would be more fun for you, your husband and the people your inviting.
I prefer parties at people's homes, so that gets my vote. You can have a nice party at home catered by a restaurant where you just pick up the food fairly cheaply. I get a Lasagna that serves about 16 for about $50. It is is veggie and delicious (you can do other things too, like a taco bar, whole pork loins with veggies, ect for not so much). I get apps at Trader Joes, lots of snack things, then do an ice cream bar for dessert. Simple, easy, and fun. I would just buy stuff for the bar, and let people help themselves.
Not lame. At home parties allows much better mingling, IMO. Cleaning up is never as bad you anticipate, especially if it's mainly adults. You just have to make sure you allot time for it afterwards so you don't get stressed out. Or if you can afford it, get a maid before and after.
I've ordered catered food but picked it up myself and it's much cheaper than a restaurant because there is no tipping and you can control the alcohol cost.

DH is a homebody and we just bought a new home (so for many people they have not seen it). I would pick up all the catered food and stock the bar well. Most places up here charge at least $1,000 to rent a room. We are having around 20 people.
Parties at home are easier for that size group. I think it will be fun!
I did a montage of pictures of DH over the years for his 40th. I made sure to include pictures of a lot of the people that we were inviting to the party. Everyone loved it!
