MIL Vent

SO DD has her dance recital coming up in about 7 weeks, and the school lets you buy tickets ahead of time at a discount, so I asked my parents and my MIL if they want tickets and do they want me to get them ahead of time.  So my parents say yes and MIL says yes but then starts to ask if FIL is going to be able to go.  DH and FIL own a business together, the recital is at 6:30 on a Wednesday night (their business closes at 6 and it's about 45 minutes away).  DH will leave work a little early to go but FIL said not to get him a ticket, he will try to get there and if he gets there in time he'll get a ticket at the door.  No problem.  MIL (who lives 10 minutes from where the recital is going to be) is frantic about how she can get there if FIL isn't closing the business early to go to the recital and now wants me to pick her up becuase she can't drive that far.  She can drive down the same damn road to go to Target but she can't drive to the HS.  I told her I didn't know because I had to talk to DH to find out what we are doing since I have to be there early and I'd let her know.

Re: MIL Vent

  • Do you think she really wants to go or is trying to get out of it? Is she worried about driving home in the dark?

  • I know she wants to go, she just doesn't like to drive so she wants me to pick her up and bring her home so she doesn't have to be bothered to drive.  I told DH is was up to him, if he wants to pick her up he can.

  • I guess I don't consider this a "vent" at all.  My mother had a really, really bad accident years before I was ever born and never drove again.  We teacsed her that the cars are much easier to drive now, etc. etc. but she was scared of even more traffic.  Someone always had to pick her up.  I have a friend (my age) who will not drive even a few blocks at night because she can't see well enough.  Maybe this is your MIL's case.  If she wants to go early then just pick her up...you said she only lives 10 minutes from the HS.  If she doesn't want to go early then have DH pick her up.  I don't see the problem or even why this would irritate you.  You might find yourself in the same situation some day.
