Molars - How do you know when they're coming in?

Will was up SCREAMING from 1-4 and from 5-7 last night. He was totally inconsolable. He'd quit for a few minutes while we rocked him, but then start right back up again. Took his temp, but he really wasn't running a fever. It was 99.9, but at that point I think he was just warm from crying so hard for so long. He was fussy all day today. You would've thought the world was ending when I handed him off to DH to go do a session this afternoon.

If we have another bad night, DH is going to take him in to get his ears checked at the pedi in the morning. I'm wondering if his molars could be coming in, though. How do you tell? Would you just give him Motrin/teething tablets anyway, even if you don't know for sure that he's teething?

  • I would try motrin, and if it helps I bet that's it. Can you get a look back there? Leo's gums were really swollen, and even got kind of bruised when his 1st year molars were coming in.

  • Ugh, I feel your pain. Two of Caroline's molars came in a couple weeks ago and I think she's working on more right now. She did everything you listed and wouldn't keep her fingers (or anything hard) out of her mouth.

Nope, he will not open his mouth at all. He won't hardly let us get a toothbrush in there either (this is very new - just started a few days ago).

I'm wondering if this is his molars coming in...It would certainly explain the biting. He always has something in his mouth (paci, block, Little People animal...) so it's kind of hard to judge if that's b/c he's teething or b/c he's just weird ;)

  • I would totally give him some Motrin. That way he will feel better and get a good nights rest. Can you feel in his mouth to see? Austin got his 1 year molars around 15 months and it was pure hell. If he is fussy, try the Motrin at least it will help him sleep!

  • I throw a little Motrin Abby's way when she's acting off around milestones like that. I never knew until I saw white teeth popping through! The gums always looked normal to me. Motrin is pretty safe so I don't feel like it's going overboard to give it at ry.

Totally sounds like teething to me.  I'm with Taytee- we give Motrin when things are off and he seems to be in pain.  But molars suuuuuuck and they really are painful.  It was always a day or two of crankiness before the first point would poke through and then major crankiness until the rest of it came in.  DS would shove things in his mouth, but wouldn't let us in there at all.  And he was always worse at night.

I'm sorry, I hope if it is molars they come through really quickly.
