How is it? Do you love getting that time away from home or has it made life extra stressful?
I am considering getting a part time job, evenings and weekends. It would be really nice to have some extra income, and I think I might enjoy having something to do that doesn't involve wiping poopy butts
. I don't want to get into a situation where I feel like I'm stretched too thin though, and I'm not 100% sure how it would work out considering that I'm EBFing (though obviously I could pump).
Then there is trying to find said job. I don't really want to work with a bunch of teenagers, but I don't really know what kind of "good" jobs are out there that are not during business hours. Anyway, DH and I just started talking about it and I'm curious to know how it works for others. Thanks for any info ![]()

I do...well, not really part-time at all. A lot of my stuff is similar to carlinlp - late nights, working during naptimes, during meal times. etc. I love having a little bit of time to get away and do something that I love. But if it wasn't something I truly LOVED, I don't think I'd enjoy it at all. My house is constantly on the verge of being a disaster, my floors don't get cleaned as often as they should, my bed is never made, and the toilets might be dirty. But I'm happy and in my book, that's what matters!
It totally get needing to feel like you're doing something more than changing dirty diapers. There are days when I realize I have food in my hair from breakfast

This is kind of what I worry about, especially if I just get something in retail which does seem to be all that is out there.
I wish I had some kind of amazing skill like you two photographers! Really, I wish someone would pay me to read, lol. I would love that, and I must say that I am one of the best readers I know

That would be my ideal scenario. It's just a matter of convincing a hypothetical employer to give me exactly what I want, lol.
Maybe a retailer like Hobby Lobby that's closed on Sundays? The problem with traditional retail is that weekend availability is pretty much required...meaning both days. In my 6 years of retail mgt., I never hired anyone for just Saturdays or just Sundays.

That's good to know. I definitely would not be ok with working both days. I'll look into the places that are closed on Sundays, thanks
Do you have an English degree or (preferably) a background in teaching? There are a number of companies who pay people to read and score essays for SAT prep or AP prep course. A teacher I met at a meeting said she gets paid a dollar an essay, which I think is pretty good. You could go to a coffeehouse and score essays as a part-time job.
No, a Psych degree. I should look into that though, maybe they'd still take me. That sounds like something I would really enjoy! Are you talking like, Kaplan and Princeton Review type places?
Yes. The company she worked for did SAT prep for low-income families. I will ask around and see if anyone I teach with knows the name, but it is that time of the year and I'm sure lots are hiring. Someone also mentioned AP Strategies, but I think they might only take teachers.
Thank you, let me know if you find out!
It is not paying you to read but what about Borders, B&N or Half Price Books? I loved working in a book store, worked for Borders for 4 years. Also I worked retail/retail management for about 11 years and many places I worked were ok with either Saturday or Sunday and did not require both of their PT employees. So it might still be worth checking into places that are open on Sundays.
A good friend of ours was working PT at Starbucks. She really did enjoy it but in the end it was taking away too much time from her family. They ended up calling her in all the time die to people being out etc. She could never say no and ended up working a lot more hours than she wanted.
I work PT, 25-28 hrs a week but it is from home. I work mostly evenings and plus have to be available to answer emails all through out the day. I also work Sundays. It works pretty well for us but does get stressful sometimes.
I do get paid to read.
Unfortunately, my company is not hiring that position though.
I am definitely going to apply to those three places. I would love to work in a bookstore. If they would be ok with only one weekend day I think it would be a good position for me.
Too bad your company isn't hiring, I think I would just die of happiness if I could really get paid to read
I work for the same company as abbysmom, but fewer hours. It works well for us, most of the time. It was hard making the transition to working with a preschooler to working with a preschooler and a new baby.
A friend's husband worked for a while scoring essays on AP tests. I just emailed her asking about the company, so I'll let you know what she says.
I've worked retail, and it has its ups and downs. I worked PT for Hobby Lobby for a while when I was just out of college. They close at 8 pm and are closed on Sundays, so I never felt like I was burned out, but honestly, the pay isn't great, and they don't have barcodes on ANYTHING. You have to hand-key the price on everything, and it's a huge PITA because you practically have to memorize the sales each week or you'll ring something up wrong, and some lady will hold up a long line on a Saturday afternoon yelling at you that her $2.00 item should be $1.00.
If I were to go back to retail, it would be in cosmetics again. I managed an Origins counter for Dillard's for a while, and overall it was a pretty easy job. I didn't mind part-time people, but I preferred someone who could come in at least two weekends a month plus some evenings so they could actually build up a clientele. The pay was much better than Hobby Lobby, the discount was decent and was good throughout the store, you get a lot of free product from the company, you go to paid trainings, and you get to play with makeup all day. It's pretty awesome. The best cosmetics retail gig, IMO, would be for someplace like Saks - the store closes much earlier than Dillard's, Macy's, etc., so that means less time away from family, and they generally have a higher end clientele who spend more per visit to the counter.

i work part time(flying, so a little different) and i really enjoy the time away. it's not easy, but i really look forward to leaving and coming home. it gives me some great adult time and time to be selfish. it's hard sometimes, but i enjoy my time that i spend with her more.
if you are going to do something, it should be something you either really enjoy or something that benefits your family--discount at a bookstore, grocers, maybe?
when i say enjoy--that can mean anything--either you enjoy the work or you may just enjoy the people you work with or work for. the work itself may not need to make you happy, you know what i mean? i enjoy the interaction with my customers and coworkers, not the flying itself.
