"Toddler Proofing" your house...

So both girls are very capable of unlocking and opening every single door in the house, including those with deadbolts.  Obviously bedroom doors, closet doors, etc. aren't a big deal, but I am concerned about the doors to the outside, the door to the garage, and the door to our basement.

I have tried a few different kinds of door knob covers, and they have managed to pry every single one off within 2 minutes.

How have you managed with the doors?  I'm really thinking about them getting up at night, which they do, and heading to a door.  Even at other times too, what if I need to shower and DH isn't home?

A gate won't work - they would climb right over.

  • Put a chain lock on the door way out of their reach.

  • Yeah, I've suggested the chain thing to DH but he really doesn't like the idea.  No clue why.

  • We have a top door lock on DH's office (the only room we really want to keep him out of). It is great - you can barely see it, very easy to install, doesn't hurt the door, etc. I don't know if it would work on an outside door, though...  The "wand" they show in the picture we don't have - we can easily reach without it, but I guess it is good for shorter people.

While I've not seen this exact lock, I'd do something like this at the very top of the door. That way even if they move a chair over, they wouldn't be able to reach the lock. GL!
