I came home Friday after giving birth (vaginally) to my daughter Wednesday night. I am in so much pain since i got home. It's hard to get up from bed or the couch, it hurts sometimes just to sit and nurse.
I expected some discomfort but i am really hurting - I just talked to a friend and she told me she had percocet as her prescription pain killer when she left the hospital; my doctor prescribed motrin. We both delivered vaginally and are breastfeeding.
I'm thinking about calling tomorrow to ask for something stronger and I was just curious what other people had as their prescription. Thanks!
Re: Pain killers after birth
my read shelf:
I never got Rx painkillers for my vaginal deliveries. (With DS I tore down to my rectum, and had to use a hemi pillow in order to sit.) The only time I was given painkillers was for my most recent C-section.
Weren't they awful! I never remembered feeling them last time and this time I had to take pain meds in the hospital just to be able to tolerate the contractions when nursing.
I gave birth vaginally with a 2nd degree tear. I was given both Motrin and Percocet. I took the Motrin around the clock for a week. I didn't take any Percocet in the hospital, but once I was home and moving around more, I was in even more pain. I took 1/2 a Percocet 4 times after I got home. It helped my pain, but unfortunately I had an allergic reaction and got a head to toe rash.
If you ask your doc for a prescription, he won't be able to call in Percocet to a pharmacy due to federal law. You would have to go pick up a paper prescription if that's what he gives you. He can call him Lortab, which is similar.
they were so horrible. I had no idea they would be so bad with #2. For me they were worse than my contractions during L&D and I didn't get the epi until 6cm. I shook so bad during them the first night. I had to have dh take dd a couple times because of the pain.
I just took Tylenol extra strength.
I also sat on the boppy for the first few days. That helped.
I personally was not comfortable taking something stronger and then taking care of LO.
I had a natural delivery with a good sized baby & they sent me home with Motrin 600mg and 5mg Norco (like Vicodin). Both are ok to take but they discourage the Norco as soon as you can stop taking it & said to aim to take after bf-ing so its not so strong in the system by the next feeding. However, both are approved for bf-ing and could be taken simultaneously (they cover different things apparently - motrin is mostly an anti inflammatory while norco is the stronger pain killer).
Anyhow, I had A LOT of pain about 5 days post delivery and I ended up calling the on call doctor. They told me I needed to be taking warm baths multiple times a day and alternate it with sitting on an ice pack to bring down the swelling. They also told me to stay on top of the pain meds for a while longer (I had already started to spread out doses and had tried avoding the Norco - too soon!). The baths made a HUGE DIFFERENCE and I can't believe how much they helped. Definitely make time to do that - the heat helps speed healing and is very relaxing and comforting. You will be amazed if you do keep them up! Hang in there...it's not a pleasant time, but it passes quickly. By 2 weeks pp, I felt almost normal (physically at least). GL!
So was I. And I took them as often as I could for the first week. I pushed out a 9lb baby and I cant sit still for very long. Not a good combination!!
