For the record, I think smoking is really gross. I don't know why anyone would want to do it. I've never in my life been even tempted to try one.
That being said, I'd imagine that it'd be pretty hard for someone to quit if they are super addicted.....and I think maybe cutting back is the best that some people are able to do. If she is truly still smoking half a pack a day....well, she needs to cut back more than that, but hopefully she is working on it.
I'd also like to say that I hope the women who are still smoking are doing so in the privacy of their own homes It was a few months ago, but I saw someone VERY visibly pregnant standing outside my work, lighting one up. I wanted to scream at her! For all I know it was a one time thing, but in order to avoid judgement, do that *** at home please!

I agree it's awful but, I have to play devil's advocate. There are worse things she could be doing. Drinking, drugs, drinking tons of caffeine. Smoking is awful while pregnant but, women used to do it all the time before they knew it was bad and it is probably the least harmful of the really bad things to do while KU. At least it doesn't cause severe deformaties or brain damage.
Actually, birth defects that may be increased when the mother smokes include: cleft lip, cleft palate, clubfoot, limb defects and some types of heart defects. Babies whom mothers smoked while pregnant are three times more likely to die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) than with babies from nonsmoking mothers. I actually have a friend that smoked during her pregnancy and her son was born with club feet. So, it can cause birth defects. I used to be a smoker. I quit a couple years ago when I first met my husband. He is a non-smoker and really pushed me to quit. I am so, so glad that he did! It was HARD, but very worth it.
