It seems to be a general rule to wash CDs 3-5 times before the first use. Is that rule based on the temperature of the wash cycle or just the wash itself? Do you think I could lessen the amount of washes if I use a high efficiency washer on a steam cycle?
Also, when sterilizing bottles before the first use do I only sterilize the nipples and attachment parts or the entire thing? I figure I do not need sterilize the bottle for the playtex drop-ins, just the nipples. But I do have a lot of other "regular" bottles. I'll probably be using the boiling method, if that makes a difference. What about pacifiers, should I boil those or just stick them through the dish washer?
Re: First wash(es) for CD and bottles?
How you wash/prep your CDs depends on what kind of CD you have. PFs and other organic/natural material dipes require more prepping than synthetics. What are you going to use?
We boiled all bottle parts and pacifiers before first use, and since then have either hand washed or thrown them in the dishwasher (and I always do an extra rinse and set them out to dry after using the dishwasher because they tend to look cloudy otherwise).

Well, I bought a few different brands, just so I could try them out (once she fits into them). I bought one of each of the following: BumGenius, Smartipants, Fuzzibuns, Happy Heiny's, Tweedlebugs, GroBaby, and Knickernappies. Hopefully they will come with instructions for washing. I guess that's more trouble for me as far as washing... I just wanted to be able to try out different brands before stocking up.
For bottle parts and such, I sterilized them intially, and now just wash them in the dishwasher.
If you are using something like prefolds (made out of cotton, hemp, bamboo, etc.), you need to wash several times separately from synthetics (like the PUL and suedecloth that BGs are made from). The more you wash them, the more absorbant they get, but I've gotten away with prepping in only three cycles. Diapers like BGs and Fuzzibunz only need one wash to prep.
:-)
Trying different brands is a great idea.. I'm glad we didn't buy all one type to start with.
The Bum Genius (3.0, I'm guessing?), FB, and HH (as long as they aren't hemp) only need to be prewashed once, you don't need to prep them because they are synthetic materials. If you got the organic BG or the hemp HH, you would need to prep them by running at least a few more wash cycles. I haven't used the other brands you listed, so I don't want to tell you the wrong thing with those.
Oh, I also think BG recommends extra prewashes for certain color diapers because the color can bleed onto other clothes/dipes? One of my zinnia one's had that on the label. All the labels will (should) have washing instructions and if not, the manufacturer's website should.
You might also want to check about the sanitize/steam options on the HE machines. I don't have an HE but I think I remember reading that the super high heat in those cycles can damage the PUL and the elastic? Don't quote me on that, though.
Good luck! I got ridiculously giddy when we were prewashing and prepping our CDs.. so excited to use them on the teeny tiny babe. Washing isn't nearly as exciting at this point with all its poopy glory, but still a breeze.

Thanks for all the great information (you too Amethyst!). I did not get the organic/hemp in the bumgenius 3.0 or HH, I know that for sure. I'll definitely check out the labels/websites before tossing them in. And maybe I'll stick to a normal wash just to be safe. I'd rather that than risk ruining them.
I'm excited too, I want them NOW! I just bought them this morning though so I'll have to wait a week or so.
