Cough meds for 3 year old?

I always thought that they changed it where kids under like 6 shouldn't take any OTC cold/cough meds...but then on Dr. Sears website, he has a dose chart for Vick's Children's nyquil and it's for 6 months and up?  There's also Vicks 44 for kids?  Is his informaiton outdated or is it safe for a 3 year old to take?

Re: Cough meds for 3 year old?

  • G's pedi told me I could give him Robitussin CF for his cough.  She said .5 tsp every four hours as needed.  This was two weeks ago.  G is 19months old.

  • My pedi has given me dosing info too, not that I remember what it is.

  • my dr said 1 tsp of robitussen dm. we can also do 1 tsp of most cold medicines/benadryll. addie's 3 (29lbs) but he's given us those doses for almost a year. from what i heard about them pulling everything people were over dosing their kids, using it too often and not paying attention to the weight/dose suggestion. which is why the bottles now say under six ask a dr

addies had a really really bad cough lately from allergies. she'll wake up in the middle of the night and be up for hours coughing, no medicine was helping too much. someone said to slather the soles of her feet with vicks and put socks on. it worked great i'm suprised to say. she woke up coughing around 2 and i reapplied and she went back to sleep. weird huh?

This! Our pedi says cold meds are fine in moderation and in the correct dosage. They gave us a dosing chart for all the different varieties of Robitussin, Triaminic and Tylenol products. Connor is 2 1/2 and 31 pounds and the dosage for everything we've used in the last year has been 1 tsp.

We already do the vicks thing on her feet with socks and it's not happen this time around.  Talked with the Dr this morning and she thinks it's not really coughs but more wheezing and so we started the breathing treatment.  She's still coughing like crazy right now... I feel so bad for her.  I bought robitussin but my Dr said not to give it to hre beacuse it won't work and I have no idea what to do...Emmy is around 40 lbs now and so she fits most of the dosing chart of a 5 year old!

  • is it due to allergies? claritin has dosing for 2 and over, we just got some to try tomorrow for addie (it's day time) our allergies are making me freaking nuts. we went to an airshow today and i couldn't stop sneezing. had to come home and put a wet cloth on my eyes to relive the pain

  • Yeah...I think it's allergies that gets so bad that it becomes a cold/asthma issue.  We actually are trying claritin tonight for the first time.  We normally do Zrytec at night for her but all the stores pulled the zrytec bottles off the shelf and so we got claritin.  Then we do benadryl during the day.  Her coughing improved a little this evening but I think it's beause we started her breathing treatment again...  I really just hope she doesn't have bad asthma when she gets older.

  • Our 2 year old son came down with a cough; it's apparently a virus that's been going around, not allergies as we thought initially.  He was coughing so badly, he would throw up his food, so as much as I hated to medicate him, we had to, just to get him to keep stuff down.  My sister (doctor) told us 1/2 tsp of Delsym, and it has worked.
