xp: securing an infant seat

what are the benefits of using the latch system vs. the safety belt to secure the base of an infant seat?

we would have liked to put one car seat behind the driver's side and the other in the center seat, leaving the seat behind the passenger open but only the outside seats have the latch systems. i am obviously going to install the seats the safest way possible, just curious as to how and why the latch system is safer than using the seat belt to secure the base of the infant seat.

Re: xp: securing an infant seat

  • much of what i have read has said they are equally safe- and with some seats- the seatbelt is actually safer --- all depends.

we have the seats secured with seatbelts in DHs car b/c it offers more room that way (to fit 3 across).  It hasn't concerned me --- they are deisgned to be used either way - both are safe.  I think latch is just easier.

  • From what I have read one is not safer than the other. LATCH just makes it easier to install. As long as you can get the seat tight while using the belt it is perfectly safe.

  • LATCH is for convenience only.  Both systems are equally safe.

DH installed all 3 seats in our sedan yesterday, and there's definitely more room if you use the seatbelts v. the LATCH.
