rolling while swaddled at night?

LO is still swaddled at night and we use a sleep positioner to try and keep her in place.  But every night I wake up at least once to find her rolled over and face down asleep.  It scares me half to death so I go and roll her back over and she always wakes up.  How can I prevent her from rolling over while swaddled?  Or is it ok to just let her keep sleeping on her belly while swaddled?

Re: rolling while swaddled at night?

  • If she's rolling, I'd most definitely UNswaddle.

  • We've tried unswaddling and she doesn't sleep.  At all.  She just kicks her legs up and down and doesn't relax at all in her crib.  It's like she thinks it's play time unless we swaddle her.  But she goes right to sleep as soon as we swaddle her.

DS started rolling up on his side a few nights ago, so that was the end of swaddling for us!  If they're swaddled and they roll on their tummy, they can't use their arms to push up, so it's a bit risky.  He's been unswaddled for the past 4 nights and, much to my surprise, he's sleeping quite well!

You pretty much have to stop swaddling now. It is way too risky. We are going to start weaning from the swaddle soon since DD can almost roll over in it. Really hope it doesn't ruin the good thing we have going with her sleep. I LOVE the 10 hours we get now.

This!  Good luck - it took DD a couple of weeks to figure out going to sleep unswaddled, ALTHOUGH as soon as we unswaddled combined with her new ability to sleep on her tummy, she has slept through the night ever since!

Have you tried talking to her softly, gently rubbing the top of her head (in a circle... this works for my LO), and gently holding her arms down while she nods off to sleep?  Or, you could try swaddling while she's awake, and then deswaddle once she falls asleep.  Or... swaddle but leave her arms out.

    • You could try transitioning to a sleepsack.  We did this with DS and he still STTN with no problems.  It's worth a try but you definitely need to stop swaddling, as it is very unsafe for your baby if she can roll.
    • As everyone said, it's not safe to swaddle now that she can and does roll over.  Try just wrapping her belly for awhile and then switching her to a regular sleepsack.  We transitioned my first DS to Halo sleepsacks, and that really helped him adjust.  Plus, it was a safe way to keep him warm.
