my friends who have delivered in hospitals have gone home the next day or day after if they had a vaginal birth and stayed 3 days if they had a c section...
With my first we stayed as long as our insurance would let us. I think it was 2 full days after the birth. We almost stayed longer actually, because of my complications (which would have required my midwife to call and sweet talk our insurance company), but they decided to send me home with a walking catheter instead.
With my second, I felt awesome and left as soon as our hospital would let us...about 24 hours later. We had to stay so he could get his 24 hour blood work, and then we went to get my other son who I was missing.
This time I'm probably going to stay on the longer side again. It was great to get home to my first son last time, but in all honesty, it was nice being at the hospital being waited on and not having extra kids to chase/worry about. My parents/DH will just have to bring my boys around for lots of visits so I don't go to crazy.

The rule is usually 2 nights for a normal delivery and 3 or 4 nights for a c-section. Nights usually start before midnight, at least at my hospital, so if you have the baby at 11:59pm, the rest of that night is your first night. If it is 12:01am, then you stay that whole day, and the whole next day, and go home two full days following.
I had a c-section and stayed 4 days because I had pre-eclampsia and other complications, so my doctor said to take the 4th night. I was induced on a Wednesday at 7pm, had the baby 4pm on Friday, and then was home at about 3pm on Tuesday.

Pre-e w/DD #1 -- now age four!
GD and PIH w/DD#2 -- now age two!
GD and unexplained third trimester bleeding with baby # 3 -- due Feb 27!
I went in on Saturday, had her on Sunday, and went home around lunch on Tuesday. I had GD so they wanted to monitor her for a little longer (even though she was OK), plus I didn't deliver within in 24 hours of my water breaking AND my doctor had to manually deliver the placenta (I couldn't deliver it on my own) so my risk of infection was higher so they wanted to monitor me a little longer as well. So, no major complications, but I was in the hospital longer than I expected. My friend (with the same doctor) was at home within 24 hours of giving birth.
gosh, it's so hard to remember! since DS was born just barely after midnight, we got some extra time. days? 2 full nights? not sure, but we loved being in the hospital. sure, it was nice to go home, but i loved the helpful nurses and meals and snacks brought to me constantly. people seem to get home fast w/their 2nd babies since they have a little one at home, but i kind of don't think that will be the case. DS will be just fine w/his 2 wonderful sets of grandparents!
Checked in at noon on Wednesday and he was born very shortly after. We had the option of leaving Thursday around 3pm but I was way too freaked out to take him home yet. We left around 11am Friday morning. This time I want to leave as soon as they allow me! Halfway into the second night I was so uncomfortable and wanted my own bed I was kicking myself for asking to stay.
Oldest son: delivered at 7:45pm, and went home two days later. It was a normal delivery, but it was my 1st and I had an episiodimy (SP?) with lots of stitches.
Son #2: delivered at 11:56pm and left at 3:30 the next day. Again, normal delivery but no tearing or stitches really needed.
This time we are planning to stay less than 24 hrs again as long as everything goes normal.
Our hospital had a full 24hr rule and then they tend to not do check out after 8pm. But our son was in the ICN so we delivered tues at 7:45pm Vaginally and checked out Friday afternoon....just moved over to the ICN til they kicked us out at shift change!
delivered sunday morning at 945am and left tuesday at 11am. My OB gave me the option of leaving monday morning but I was scared to leave the nurses lol! I think I will leave after one day this time barring any complications, since I'll have my DD to look after.
Was discharged by doctor 24 hours after delivery...but stayed a few extra hours waiting on DS to pee after circumcision. Some of our doctors in L&D like new mom's to stay 48 hours though...but mine usually lets his go at 24 hours.
We checked in on Wednesday around 3 am, I ended up having a c-section around 3 pm on Thursday and we were discharged Saturday morning around 8am. I don't like hospitals and as long as I was up and walking they said it was fine to leave.
With DD1 she was born at 4:50pm on a Saturday and I was able to go home Monday by about lunch time.
With DD2 she was born at 1am on a Thursday morning and I went home Saturday morning. I could have left Friday, but decided to have one more night of "good sleep" before starting our busy life at home
With DD I checked in the hospital on a Monday and 11:30 pm...I delivered at 2:51 am...and since it was "technically" Tuesday...they made me stay all of Tuesday and Wednesday for my 2 days and then released me on Thursday at like 1 pm.....it was WAY TOO LONG! I will request to be released earlier this time... I had an easy delivery...no drugs at all, no tearing and no hemorrhoids and baby was great...so I if all goes all well this time, I would LOVE to go home the next day
Re: 2nd timers..When did you go home?

We really wanted to go home!
Stayed 2 days with DD. The hospital is standard 2 days for vaginal and 3 days for csection as long as there aren't any complications.
