    They have to keep the sexual tension there!  If they're together, then it can't be for long.  Have you ever noticed with the long-running shows that they can't put the couple that everyone WANTS to get together -  together?  It's part of the intensity of the show. 

    I know, I want them to be together, too.  And, it's apparent that the characters do also....It just makes for good tv.
