What are drawer liners for?

LO's dresser is coming next week (yay!) and I was debating whether I should line the drawers with contact paper or drawer liners... is there any reason for doing this?  DH still uses his dresser that he had when he was a kid and it still has the liners intact (adorable little clowns, at that!)... I just didn't know if the liners are for decoration (which doesn't really make sense on the inside of a dresser drawer) or if they serve some sort of purpose...

Re: What are drawer liners for?

  • Sometimes they are scented, but I guess is that if the insides of a drawer are varnished or stained, it would keep the chemical away from your fabrics?

  • I agree with PP - I think it's to keep any chemicals from getting onto whatever is in your drawer.  I used a drawer liner (really a shelf liner) in one of my closets because I noticed that the towels were sticking to the paint on the shelf.  The liners I used were also lightly scented, which I didn't mind.

  • I use them in all our drawers because I don't want my clothes touching the wood and getting snagged or splinters in them.  I use liners from container store that are cloth/canvas, and cut them to fit.
