s/o throwing a fit when changing

When did you stop using a changing table for LO?  C is still super squirmy and hates to lay still while we change his diaper.  Sometimes we can distract him with a toy, but it's almost always a challenge.  I've been wondering how long we will be using the changing pad (right now it's just on top of his regular dresser).  If you no longer use a changing table, do you just use the floor?  Do you change them while standing (like fjaril and MC)?

  • Ali has gotten to where she'll preemptively cry. As soon as I turn her horizantal in preparation for lying her down on the changing pad, even if I"m still holding her, she'll cry. Bring her back upright to my shoulder, she'll stop. Horizantal--cry. And actually putting her down ON the changer? You would think I was lying her on a bed of nails. Booger.

Having DH come and play peak-a-boo with the cat seems to distract her enough to get the job done. I think the cat's getting tired of it.

    Dear Bump: You suck.

Haha we do the peak-a-boo game! She cries while laughing. It's a pretty funny sight, which reminds me that I need to get the flip cam out to capture these moments.

  • I've found that it is even worse when I try to change Alessandra on the floor, and I end up having to pin her down with my leg. What has worked for me is to sit Alessandra on the changing pad rather than laying her down right away. I give her a toy or something to play with and give her a minute to get interested in it, and then I lay her down and change her diaper. I rarely have to fight with her anymore.

    That's a good idea!

We stopped using the changing table and switched to the floor as soon as she started rocking back and forth on her knees in preparation for crawling.

  • I stopped with the changing table as soon as he could roll over. Once he was strong enough to really roll over he would struggle as soon as he laid down. Now we change on the floor, sometimes with my leg on him sometimes not. Now that his balance is better I could probably try changing him standing up. If I can get him interested in something the toy distraction would work but typically he is not easily distracted.

  • I change both my kids on the floor now. I guess I started using the floor once DS got really squirmy and started crawling... so around 7 months or so.

We had to do this for a while, too.  It really helped.

We never stopped using the changing table.  DS outgrew his squirminess, for the most part.

  • Ditto Emer.  Both DC's grew out of their squirminess and we used the changing table (dresser) until DS was potty trained and we still use the changing table for DD and she'll be two in a week (eek!).

  • We tried to use a non-changing table surface, but he rolled soooooo much that it was much harder to change him.  We found the changing table to be better...either we give him his paci or he plays with the straps for the curved pad as a distraction.
