3rd Trimester

What happens if I'm out of town and go into labor?

I just turned 35 weeks and my father was in ER yesterday, and he is having major surgery this Saturday.  I am worried he won't live much longer.

He has had health problems for some time now and I just want to prepare for the worst. I will wait to hear how he is doing after surgery to make any plans, but I may want to go see him.

So I would be around 36 weeks  ..what would happen if I go into labor while I'm out of town?  How would the delivery be handled by a hospital where I am not registered at?

Re: What happens if I'm out of town and go into labor?

  • If you go I would plan on bringing copies of your medical records. Also, you would just have to register when you get there instead of preregistering, it'll take linger than usual to be admitted. I am so sorry to hear about your father and really hope that you won't have to use any of this advice.

  • Wow. I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this issue.

How far out of town are you going?  Are you in any kind of risk category for possibly going into labor early?

Batman likes to watch cartoons on the weekends. Whatever.

did you think about the fact that she's gonna be stressed out beyond belief?? that causes ptl and can lead to prematurity... (https://www.marchofdimes.com/professionals/14332_23759.asp)

she's definitely got a right to be worried..

just make sure you've got all the info you think you'd need just in case of the event of that taking place. maybe even call the local hospital and ask what their protocol is and if you should happen to go into labor while in town, would there be anything you could do prior as a 'just in case' thing?

hope this helps and really hope you really don't need to use any of our advice.

T&P are definitely being sent your way dear.

No, just thinking of the "what if" scenarios.  I would be traveling w/o my husband too....

it's not that far.. about a 90 minute plane ride.

I'm due on May 27th and I don't know of any reason I'd go into labor early..except can stress trigger labor?

In that case I would just bring copies of your medical records/insurance cards & a birth plan if you have one.

    Yes.

So I agree with PPs... bring copies of your medical records.

I take it the doctor gave you the okay to fly that late?

You're gonna wanna look into what you have to do to get an "ok" from your doctor to fly this late in pregnancy.  Most airlines won't allow yout to fly so late in pregnancy...

Sorry you're dealing with this! Tongue Tied

  • Bring a copy of your insurance records. Check if your insurance company covers the hospital where you are, if not then call to let them know the situation just in case. If you go into labor they may ask you to call before going to the hospital.

Most importantly, call your doc and get the ok to fly. Get it in a note and double check with the airline. Most airlines and doctors won't let women fly this far into the pregnancy.

I haven't talked to my doc yet since I have not made a decision on whether or not to go yet..the surgery is tomorrow morning so I'll wait to see how he is doing during next week.  I would have to call her office and explain to get medical records too
