When did your LO(s) drop down to one nap?

And how did you know it was time?  And is it going to be painful?

I know this has been asked a bajillion times - sorry!

Yesterday the guys only took one nap in the morning.  And I know they were exhausted around the time when their second nap should have been, but we were out and about and by the time I got home to lie them down, it just didn't seem worth it.  So no second nap.  Last night they slept until past 7 a.m.!!!  Both of them!!!  That has never, ever happened.

Then today we had an epic struggle but the boys went down at 4:30.  But by the time they wake up, it'll be time to start the nighttime routine and will be time for bed again, but they're not going to be tired at all.  Ugh.

What to do. What to do...

Re: When did your LO(s) drop down to one nap?

  • Little still takes 2 naps.  I've thought about trying to transition him myself, but he seems to really still need his morning nap.  So, I'm no help.  :)

  • 14 months.  It took about a month for her to adjust.  She wasn't tired enough for 2 but wasn't sleeping long enough for one to not be cranky.
  • Abby took 2 naps well into 18months. They're probably just off their schedule and a little overtired. Do you want them down to one nap a day?

Not necessarily, but they fight naps so much most of the time that I'm wondering if they're trying to tell me something.  Plus they're going into daycare (Crying ) this summer, and their room will have a set nap/quiet time at noon.  They'll accommodate the boys if they pass out before or after that, but then they'll be off everyone else's schedule.

  • 11 months.  I was shocked because I didn't know it could happen that early.  We just started moving the start of her morning nap back further and further in 30 increments until it got to where it's been for a long time now...around 1-2ish.

  • Between 15 and 16 mo. he started playing a lot during his afternoon nap, so I knew it was time.  Since he seemed to prefer the morning nap, I started moving morning nap time back 30 minutes every day until it got to a more reasonable mid-day time.  He naps around 12:30- 12:45 now usually for 2-3 hours.

ETA: No, it actually wasn't painful.  On the first day, I put him down around 10:30 (normally, it would have been 9:30... okay I lied about the 30 -minute part for that day) and he slept until 1:30.  I think we just put him to bed early that night.  At 16 mo. he was still going to bed around 7, so I think we maybe did 6:30 that night.  HTH

  • she took two 1-1.5 hr naps until about 2 years old, now naps once for about 2 hours.
  • My two older girls took two until 18 mo, but this little guy rarely takes a morning one, just catnaps.  I am always out and about getting kids, etc.  It works though; even though he is very tiny (13 lbs at 6 mo) he sleeps from 8:30-5, briefly eats and sleeps until one of his crazy sisters wakes him up around 7:15 (he would sleep until 8 on his own!)  I would definitely not drop the PM.  The AM one is usually the one to remove.  You will have crabby campers after a while without a PM nap, IMO.
  • DS went down to one nap at around 12 months.  It was a sad, sad time...
  • DD dropped to one at 11 months.  It just sort-of happened.  I think there were a couple of days / maybe a week where she might take 2 but the morning one was really short - 30 minutes or so.

DS is taking 2-3 right now (6 months).  Looks like he may drop to 2 soon.

Don't sweat it too much.  Just watch over the next week or so.  It will just sort-of happen.

  • He did it on his own at about 20 months.  He was going to have to do it anyway, since he started going to MDO/pre-school at 21 months.
  • DS is 14 months and it looks like he is down to 1 nap as of this week. He tried to drop his morning nap and I wasnt having it. Yes, I am selfish I need a break by the afternoon! So, I put him down around 1-1:30ish.
