Really people cook from scratch that much?

Re: Really people cook from scratch that much?

  • I made homemade pizza last night that consisted of:

    premade pizza crust

    jarred pizza sauce

    bagged mozz cheese

    packaged pepperoni,

    a ham steak

    1/4 green pepper

    1/2 onion.

To me, because I didn't call and order it, that was a homemade pizza for dinner.

  • and let me add, I do cook every day, to me its from scratch. If its not a microwave meal than I made it. I have to cook every day during the week even though I work 40 hrs 5 days a week because If I don't B will have no lunch for school the next day. Now, Thursday, Fri and Sat I don't cook unless we grill something becuase that is MY break.

Exactly how do you make pasta from scratch?  Is it just flour and water?  And how do you make flour?  Do you grow it?

    (i'm being serious)

1 c flour to 1 large egg. Add small amounts of water as needed to make it the right texture. Make as much as you need. Roll it out and cut in pieces or put it through a pasta maker to do spaghetti.  Fresh pasta is actually one of the easiest things to make, I think.

  • I rarely cook from scratch.  And that's a big rarely.  I despise cooking.  My 3 year old eats nothing but the same stuff as she has SPD.

H and I are pretty much separated so I don't bother cooking for myself.  I use bagged veggies, boxed pastas.

I eat frozen meals or cereal or eggs most of the time.

And one the few things DD will eat is McDonald's fries and we drink juice.

She eats chocolate too.  The horror.

If I turn on the stove, that is cooking "from scratch"!

It is for me too! :) Really though, what's wrong with brown rice or whole grain pasta from a box? Do I need to buy my own bread maker in order to make my sandwiches "from scratch"? (And what about lunch meat and peanut butter... no one makes those home made really.)

  • I do a lot of from scratch cooking because it's what I grew up on and know how to cook.  Dinner generally never takes more than 30 minutes to prepare and I do a lot of homemade sauces/soups/stews on the weekend and freeze in single dinner portions for weeknights.  I mainly do this because it's just how I've always eaten, but it also ends up costing a lot less than processed foods and we're on a really tight budget.

I think it also depends on your definition of "scratch."  I don't mind occasionally using a canned or boxed item provided the only contents of that canned/boxed item is one ingredient (i.e. tomato puree, which is tomatoes and water).  And we pretty much solely use frozen veggies because fresh go bad too quickly.  I do make a lot of my own bread, but that's a recent hobby of mine.

  • The whole thing is absurb, which was basically my point in the first post about this today.  I do WOH and honestly, there are some days where I could probably say our dinner is from scratch.  Grilled chicken or fish along with salad and roasted veggies ... not that hard to do.  would exactly say it's gourmet either.  There are some things I won't waste my time to make from scratch b/c I feel like I can find a healthy alternative ready made w/o preservatives.  I think that I would still use these items if I SAH, too.  It's still a far cry from Hamburger Helper for heavens sake.

  • My DH would never ever eat anything out of a box...and I am totally serious.  He eats no sugar, salt, oil (except EVOO), food coloring or preservatives...so basically everything I make (at least for him is from scratch).  I do sometimes make things from a box or can (ravioli, Kraft mac and cheese, soup) for the kids...that is why I said 95-100%.  If my DH is home I make him a separate meal.  I did this when I worked full-time as well...and I used to work 3 12-hour days and 1 6-hour day.  I just made it in the morning and left it in the pan.  He only eats chicken, turkey and fish.  Many times it is vegetarian for him...spag sauce and noodles, salad, and a veggie.  I'll put bread crumbs on chicken, fry in EVOO, add some diced tomatoes, rice or noodles and that is his dinner.  With such a limited choices I feel like I cook the same things over and over again....although as long as I make it with chicken, turkey or fish I'm OK.  lol  Oh ya...he doesn't eat egg yolks either...so when I make noodles I have to just use the whites for his.  He doesn't have a problem eating meatloaf made from ground turkey and the rest of us eat Mexican casserole.  He never used to be soooo picky until he got malignant melanoma...which was about 15 years ago.  Sometimes I feel like I'm a short order cook.  BTW...I do NOT make special meals for the kids...never have.
