Retract-a-Gate ?

I need to get something asap since Luke has decided he has a fascination with the stairs.  Here's my question:  Our two bottom stairs aren't straight across.  There's about a 30* angle on the side of each of them.  (Hope that makes sense.)  Would the retract-a-gate simply bend around this angle?  Would it still be secure?

I would just install the gate on the 3rd step, but there's a handrail along the wall so I don't think the gate would work there.

This is an exaggerated picture of what I'm talking about.  If you look at the top step, my bottom stair steps look like that (but with only one side having the angled piece).

I could just attach it to the wall just above the stair so that it stretches straight, but the angle part of the stair will just poke out underneath the gate.  Do you think that would work?

Ok, I think I get it.  The gate is going to take the path of least resistance between the two anchor points.  So if your walls/banisters are straight across from one another, it will stretch straight across.  If they are not straight across, it will just connect at an angle.

The thing I was worried about was stretching the fabric around that bend in the stairs.  But if I install it just above the stair so that the bottom of the fabric is kinda sitting on the stair, that would eliminate the problem.  I think...   Tell me if there's a flaw in that logic.

That would totally work.  Otherwise, if you tried to bend it around the stair, it would probably pull up since the stair is not as tall as the gate.  KWIM, fellow nerd?

    Totally.  Geeked

And thank you for helping think out loud.  :)
