Special Needs

Any Downs moms on who have or are PT'ing?

how old was your child when you started? What were you cues to start?

I dont even know where to begin!! lol We have a potty out for C but he has no idea what its for.. he thinks its a toy.. we DEF discourage him playing with it... he DID sit on it (fully clothed) the other day and thought that was a start since he's never even done that before.. I guess he finally realized that its something you sit on..

He does point to his diaper but we dont know exactly why he does it.. He'll do it when he is wet and needs to be changed, but will also do it when we've JUST changed him.. So i dont know if he's telling us WHEN he goes or has to go?

Any insight, tips, advice would be much appreciated!!

I think I am being delusional in hoping that he's OUT of diapers before the new baby is born in September.. I am not going to push it but I dont want to miss any signs that he may be ready..

  • I see you have no responses. DS has Autism and we're in the midst of potty training (8+months). I have NO IDEA what the differences are as far as the reasons it is difficult or what special modifications you have to use to get them to understand.... BUT... I am eyeball deep in it and stopped in to say Hi. I hope it goes well & I hope someone can offer support specific to your situation.

My only advice is this: if he's not ready, don't push it just yet. It's just more work for YOU in the long run.

  • thank you, I appreciate it. I DEF dont want to push it or make more work for myself.. just wanted to get an idea of what signs I should be looking for or a round about/average age to start trying.. even though I know every child is different....

good luck to you as well!

  • I can't relate but wanted to share our story.  DS#1 has severe apraxia and therefore could not verbally tell us when he wanted to go.  We had the potty out and let him watch us go starting around the age your son is now.  Around his 3rd bday I tried the 3 day method (straight to underwear) and it failed miserably.  He wasn't ready and just didn't get it.  So we went back to pull ups and just had him sit every so often on the potty.  He would not use a kid potty but insisted on the regular one.  He pretty quickly caught on around age 3 what it was for.  But it wasn't until 3.5 yrs that he began telling us (signs and now some words) that he needed to go.  We tried the 3 day method again on a Saturday and by Monday morning he was completely potty trained.  Even at night.

I guess what I'm saying is wait until he's ready.  I read somewhere that most boys aren't ready until 3 or 3.5 yrs.  I also had 2 in diapers (my 2 are 17.5 months apart) so I know the desire to potty train.  But really it's not so bad with 2 in diapers (other than having to buy all the diapers & wipes).

  • I have no insight.........but your little Caleb melts my heart.  He is super cute.
  • I don't have any words of wisdom but just wanted to tell you my son will be 3 in a week and he is not potty trained and is not that interested in being potty trained except that he likes calling himself a big kid because he wears pull ups (even though he goes in his pull ups all the time).  I would encourage Caleb to sit on the potty and I definitely recommend the video Potty Power - it's a really fun video with catchy songs and my son loves it (even I find myself walking around singing "I'm proud to wear my underwear!").  But don't worry if he's not ready - he's right on par with the other kids his age!
  • First of all, your son is absolutly adorable.

DD is not yet two, but everynight before bathtime she sits on the potty.  I was sick of her peeing on the floor everynight.  She doesn't get it AT ALL, and now fights me to say sitting, but on the odd chance that she does go, she gets so excited and dumps the potty into the toilet and flushes.  I think the flushing helps A LOT!!

    GL!!
