How long is too long in the stroller?

Will and I are currently doing 5 mile runs. With a warm up and cool down, this usually equals about an hour in the jogging stroller. He's happy as a clam the entire time and eats snacks, drinks water, and plays with his toys. I really would like to up my mileage and eventually be doing 10 mile long runs once a week with shorter runs 5 days a week. Theoretically the 10 mile run would take 2 hours, but I'm guessing it'll probably be closer to 2 1/2.

Would you say 2 1/2 hours is too long in the stroller IF he is happy? Doing the long run on weekends by myself isn't really a feasible option because I usually have sessions on the weekends.

  • I don't think there's any problem if he's happy.  The only thing I would worry about is how much direct sun he's getting/ how hot it is outside.

He really doesn't get much direct sun at all. Maybe a tiny bit on his legs, but I have a big sunshade pulled over him. He can't see out worth crap, but he's covered ;)

And if it's hot, we definitely won't be going far! This summer we're going to have to get up at dawn to get out before it gets too hot. Or I'm going to have to join a gym and leave him in childcare...I predict that the latter will happen in about 17 years Stick out tongue

Ahh, the sunshade on our stroller is crap.  I just have to say that I am in awe of anyone who would get up at dawn, much less to then do physical exercise.  ::shudder::  I am trying to motivate myself to go and ride our stationary bike right now, but the lure of the computer is too strong.

  • I think as long as he's not too hot, and not too fussy then it's fine.  I'm SO paranoid about sun exposure.  I freaked out on our walk this morning b/c I forgot to put sunblock on his legs.  No reddness, it was at 10am.  :)
  • As long as he's happy, I think that's great! I bet he loves the view :)

  • No, I don't think that is too long at all. You are just so lucky he is happy in the stroller. Austin has never been a happy child in the stroller. ;-) Go you for running that far!!!!!!

  • Thanks everyone! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't subjecting my kid to torture :)

kiarox - I'm dreading getting up early this summer, but it's the only way it'll work. I'm going ~4pm now and it's already starting to get a little too hot for me to be comfortable running for too long. Are there any TV shows you can watch while you do the stationary bike? I hate doing any stationary activities, but love running outdoors.

  • Libby I am so envious of you. I wish I was running 5 miles with or without stroller. I think that as long as he is happy it is fine. It is no different than having him in car seat for a 2.5 hour road trip, right? And that isn't so bad, plus he's getting fresh air and if he was upset and you had to stop you could and it is really good for you (which is good for him).

  • Mine loves the stroller, he'll even go to the garage and point and ask to get in it. I say go for it!

You should go for a short little run in the evenings! I'm a huge fan of the Galloway program (essentially you do run/walk intervals - I do 5 minutes running, 1 minute walking, but you can do 1 minute running, 2 minutes walking if you need). It's such a stress-reliever for me.

  • As long as he's happy, I don't see a problem with it.

I've been walking (no where near running) for an hour in the evenings with Caroline..she naps pretty much the whole time.

I actually did a short walk/run yesterday. I so need to do it more often!

Eh.  We watch TV on our computers but it's not quite loud enough to her over the bike/ fan.  Usually I read which is what I did today.
