VENT- what happened to the customer is always right??

Being P&G shareholders we get these nifty coupon books in the mail.  There's a lot of coupons (mulitple for each item) and I don't go through them all that quickly.  There were 2 $3 coupnons for ClearblueEasy TESTS in there.  They don't specify pregnancy or ovulation tests, just TESTS.  I don't normally buy CBE Ovulation tests b/c they're so much more expensive, but since I had a coupon I bought a pack of 5 digital pregnancy tests and a 7 pack of ovulation tests, so I figured I could use both coupons.

Well, the coupons expired a few months ago, but all the other ones I've been using have scanned & worked just fine.  So I get to the check out, the crotchety old man scans the first coupon and it works just fine.  Next coupon is one of the CBE coupons.  Ancient man: "I can't scan these, they're expired"  me: "oh, well the one you just scanned worked just fine, can you just scan the rest to see if they'll work?"  Old man: " They WON'T, we aren't allowed to take them"  me: " oh, welll alright"  I knew they would all scan, so he rolled his eyes and did it- it worked just fine.   They all did.  I told him I once worked in a grocery store and we were always told as long as the coupons scanned to just take them, as long as we definitely bought the item.  Whatev.

So he gets to a coupon that was NOT expired and tells me he can't use it because a small portion of the bar code was torn off.  But you could CLEARLY see that I bought the item and how much the coupns was for.  I said, "can't you just enter it manually?" (I knew you could) and he sighed and hemmed and hawwed some more, entered it manually, then hands me back one of my $3 CBE coupons.  Old man: "You didn't buy this item"  me: "Umm, yes I did"  I pulled out both boxes, now with a line anxiously waiting and listening.  me " The coupon doesn't specify ovulation test or pregnancy test, so they should both work, or you could just enter it in manually" He refused.  I really thought about having him take one of the boxes off, but I'm sure he would have had to get a manager over there and I didn't want to piss anyone off.  UGH.  It's not like it was a store coupon, it was a manufacturers coupon.  I definitely don't like cheating the system or anything, but geeez, he could have been a little nicer.  He did scan them eventually, so I guess I should be grateful for that.

You're welcome P&G.  I expect our stock to soar in the next few days, thankyou.

*No, not pg, or trying, tests don't expire until 08/11.  Wink

  • I'm speaking as someone who worked in a grocery store for many years and dealt with crazy coupon people who ALWAYS tried to cheat the system.  Note: I'm not saying you're that person, but almost every other coupon hoarding person is.  They try to sneak in that expired coupon, or cut the coupon off where the expiration date was.  While working at the grocery store I too refused to take the coupon.  The store doesn't get reimbursed the money when the coupon is expired. No offense, but they have expiration dates for a reason.

Now as far as the torn bar code, he was just being an a$$! You are right all he had to do was enter it manually.not.very.hard.

  • What the heck??!! We have stock in P&G and have for 3 years... I have NEVER received coupons in the mail! hmmmm....

Sorry he was a butthole. I can't stand rude cashiers.

  • I own a retail store, and I have to tell you, the customers in my store are NOT always right.  In my business, though, customers tend to lie, refuse to accept our policies, and feel like they can haggle for some reason.  And basically treat us like sh!t.  It's like no other retail I've ever seen.  That being said, it is never okay for a cashier to be rude.  No matter what you're dealing with.  Never.  I'm sorry you had to deal with that.  Boo on grumpy-old-man-checker.

  • Ugh!  I totally sympathize.  I've had a nightmare of a day when it comes to CS.  Don't even get me started.

I will say that our new oven and microwave will NOT be arriving tomorrow as previously scheduled.  Oh, and we've already arranged for our current stove to be sold and picked up tomorrow, because we were "certain" that they would be here by 5 tomorrow....

Grar.  I'm sorry people are so RUDE!
