How much do you pay for YOUR shampoo?

My sisters hair looked really nice & thick the last time she was here.  I asked her what she was using on it.  The shampoo that she mentioned is around 20.00. Matrix biolage something or other.  She uses that plus some conditioner, heat protection spray(?), etc.

Would you pay 20+ for shampoo?  Does shampoo really make a difference?  I'd think conditioner would be more important.  Then again my hair isn't looking so great so what do I know.

Re: How much do you pay for YOUR shampoo?

  • I HATED Biolage for my curly hair. It dried it out and made it even more frizzy.

I use Organix coconut milk conditioner now, no shampoo. It's about $7 for a small bottle.

I would be more inclined to spend money on actual hair products. I need to pick up leave-in conditioner and hair spray from the salon I go to - each runs about $15-$20 a bottle, but I don't go through it quickly at all.  Right now I am using some crappy Herbal Essences stuff, and it sucks.

  • I wouldn't pay $20 for shampoo or coniditioner but I'm cheap:) My hairstylist says it's important to try and keep switching brands every now and then so that's what I do and I think it works pretty well.
  • haha.. I can actually answer this bc I bought new stuff today.  I paid $20 for a liter each, shampoo and conditioner.

I highlight my hair, so a good shampoo is important to me.  Then again, I am buying a liter....

what is the quantity of the shampoo that she is buying??  That makes a big difference.

  • I use Aveda.  The little bottle is about $10, the big bottle $22-25.  It's not the specialty ones - like the smoothing ones, etc.  I love it.  I do think that good shampoo makes a difference over a bargain one.

  • I only use the stuff that my salon sells (Eufora.)  I think my shampoo is $25 for the bottle, but then is less expensive for the refills. I ABSOLUTELY think it makes a world of difference in my hair.  Seriously, it's great.  If you buy from a salon, they should return the product if you don't like it.  I know I've taken 1/2 used bottles in to my salon of products that just didn't work out for me and they either refunded or traded me for a different product.  I'm a big believer in good hair products making a difference.  Oh, and fwiw, I only buy shampoo/conditioner about 4 times a year max. I just don't go through it quickly.

And this is also very true. The Biolage comes in the liters, and I was paying about $20 a liter. It lasts forever.

  • I usually buy salon shampoo and conditioner and yes, it does make a difference. I went off of salon products for a couple months at one point and when I sat down in my stylist's chair, right away she said, "what did you do?" She could tell just by glancing at it that it wasn't as healthy. '

To help reduce the cost, I buy them in liter size and only when I can find them on sale. Most salons and hair product stores in the mall run specials ever couple of months.

  • The Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Lavender Mint stuff I use is $13 for pretty small bottles and I thought that was cheap.  Embarrassed I stock up when its 2 for $20.

I also use Super Skinny Serum which is like $12 and some other Paul Mitchell product in that same price range.

I am never happy with cheaper hair products.

  • Redken "all soft" or "so soft" I forget what it's called. I pay 10$ for shampoo and conditioner because my friend is hairstylist and buys it for me at discount. Otherwise it'd be $20+ for the both of them. It's super concentrated so I only use a dime sized amount from each and my hair is medium length.

It's worth it. The difference in my hair after using this stuff is amazing compared to cheaper stuff.

ETA: I bleach my hair blonde once a month so nice shampoo/conditioner is very important.

  • I switch brands often too - but I just get whatever's at Target and smells nice. Right now that's the new Aveeno stuff and at $8 a bottle is on the high end for me. I also don't color or flat iron my hair or anything.
  • I use Bumble and Bumble, which costs more than I'm happy with, but my hair does SO much better with it than anything else I've tried.
  • LOL, Kel, I LOVE Biolage Matrix for my curly hair, and I LOATHE Organix. :)  I always use Biolage, I get the ultra-hydrating.  I think it's about $20 for the shampoo and $32 for the conditioner, but it lasts a long time.

I think that you have much curlier hair than I do, though. Or tighter curls, rather. Mine are more wavy. The Biolage made it all funky and weird, and I didn't like it!

I usually use All Soft. My BFF's mom used to be a hair dresser, so I used to get the discount from her, but since I don't live near them anymore, I usually buy it when it's on sale for $13.99 for the big bottles at Ulta. I also like the conditioning creme (I forget what exactly it's called.) But I forgot to stock up last time it was on sale, so I just grabbed Tresemme Moisture at Target for like $5 a bottle or something cheap like that. My DH asked me yesterday if I did something different with my hair. I said no, not really thinking about changing shampoo and conditioners and he said "Weird. It just looks shinier. Like it's healthier or something. It looks really good." And I've actually noticed that it feels softer. So now I'm thinking I might not want to switch back!

  • I do pay a lot for shampoo and conditioner, but I have really screwed up hair.  I used to use Suave Clarifying shampoo every day, which was awesome on cleaning up my greasy roots, but it made my ends all crusty and no amount of conditioner would help (w/o making my roots greasy again!).

I use Joico Moisture Recovery shampoo and conditioner now, and I'm only about halfway through a 1L pair and it's been about 8mos.  I do still use the Suave Clarifying a couple of times per week to get the buildup out.  The pair of liters was only like $25 at Ulta.  Then I use Paul Mitchell mousse and hairspray, the formula that says "clean" on it.  I really like that stuff b/c I hate the feeling of having product in my hair, and these don't make me feel all sticky.  I don't use very much of those either, so they last a long time too.  I did notice that since I upgraded my hair products, I don't need to get a trim as often, and I've actually saved money in the long run.

  • I also hated Biolage. I don't have curly hair, but it made my hair feel like straw.
  • I pay about $13 for a fairly small bottle (https://www.origins.com/templates/products/sp_nonshaded.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY5984&PRODUCT_ID=PROD243) or (https://www.origins.com/templates/products/sp_nonshaded.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY5806&PRODUCT_ID=PROD233) but I have issues with my scalp, and I've found that these keep my scalp really healthy, and leave my hair looking great. I still try other types every now and then, but I find I really need these for my sensitive scalp.

I also hate Biolage for curly hair! I'm loving Dove moisture shampoo & conditioner. Or Aussie moist. I get them at BJ's and a gigantic bottle is $9- $10??

  • It really DOES make a difference, BUT! I've found the greatest shampoo & conditioner for only $5 each, it's the panteen pro Vrestoratives- time renewal shampoo & conditioner.  It makes my hair so smooth and soft just like at the salon.  I got my sister hooked and a few friends.  And my sis is a total snob, so yeah, it really holds up to the name brand stuff.

This is what the bottle looks like,
  • I've just switched from Aussie to Redken. I've tried pretty much all the drugstore brands and my hair is always a mess. I've also used Rusk and it was OK. You can sometimes get good deals at Trade Secret. I bought my Rusk at 75% off. I think I might have paid $5 per bottle. The Redken I just bought came from Ulta, it's Smooth Down and my hair felt amazing after. It was a 2 pack special for $20, I think it's normally $20 a bottle.

I would buy the small bottles to start with until you decide what works best for you.

  • I usually have one or two expensive bottles of shampoo and one or two cheap bottles on the go at the same time. I like to switch it up everyday, lol. Lately I'm on an Aveda kick - I love how they smell. And I think that expensive shampoo absolutely makes a difference. Plus, I find that I use way less shampoo if it's a really good brand; I guess that they're a lot more concentrated or something so they do end up lasting a long time.
  • That's what I use, so yes  :)

  • when i'm feeling extra spiffy i splurge on products from this line.  it does make a huge difference.  the bottles are tiny and expensive so i use it every few days.

eta: on my other days i used the l'oreal sulfate free line.  it's good.

  • I think I've used most of the products mentioned here!  Funny thing is back in college when I had NO money, I bought Aveda which is like $30 something a bottle.  Did the Redken All Soft for awhile and really liked it.  Usually got it on sale at Ulta so it was cheaper than Aveda.  Now I buy the Kirkland brand from Costco.  It's like $7.99 for a pair of liter bottles.  Honestly, I do miss how incredible Aveda smelled (it was heavenly) but I'd rather save the money.  Especially since my hair looks pretty much the same.  I do avoid the drugstore brands though b/c they dry out my hair.  HTH!

    Ditto!

  • I have very thick, curly, extremely dry hair and we have hard water, so shampoo and conditioner quality are important to me.

Right now I'm using Nexxus, and I love it. It leaves my hair really soft, and I love the smell. I use cocount oil as a leave in conditioner, and my hair has never looked better.

I pay around $14 for a smallish size bottle, but I only wash my hair twice a week so it lasts.

Same here. It is Sauve Professional for me. They have compareable shampoo to Biloage, Matrix and Aveda. I really like it.
