Preemies

Seriously starting to lose it.

This is my first time here... I am usually in the 3rd Trimester board. I got hospitalized about three days ago and I am now in risk of having a premature baby. I am 32 weeks, 3cm dilated and thinned out. My OB told me this shouldn't be the case because this is my first time expecting. I guess I just need a bit of support... or hope. I'm just so terrified and I have no idea what to expect. I have already received two shots to develop my little man's lungs faster if he were to come this week. Has anyone else gone through this, this early?

Re: Seriously starting to lose it.

  • I had my son at 30 weeks and he was IUGR so he was the size of a 28 weeker. It was terrifying. He is doing good now.  It is great you have made it to 32 weeks and that you received the steroid shots. Every day you keep the little one inside is less time in the NICU. If you have any questions there are lots of women here to answer them.
A small start at 2lb 9oz, 60 day NICU stay, and 6 months of O2 My 30 weeker is growing up! <a href="http://s83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/bippy798/?action=view

  • i had a high risk pregnancy and emergency section at 27w... so i can't relate exactly... but i know the fear and the worry of the baby (possibly) coming early. it's great that you were able to get the shots, and that you're already 32 weeks...

i know there are ladies on here who were able to hold out for a while and/or had preemies around 32 or so. i'm sure they'll be happy to tell you their stories. just know that every day that your lo is inside you changes the outcome if he were to come early. every day is helping him more and more. just remember you're doing everything in your power.. and try to take it easy as much as you can!

  • I had DD at 32 weeks 3 days due to pre-e, and a partial abruption.  It is good that you are in the hospital and that they are monitoring you.  It is also great that you have received the sterid shots for his lungs, those helped DD immensley.  I really hope that you are able to keep him in for awhile longer and that things turn out okay for you.  Either way, we are here to support you when you need us.  Feel free to ask any questions.

  • Sorry you're in the situation you're in. I had DS suddenly at 34w5d with no warning and no steroid shots. The steroid shots are awesome and should do wonders for your little guy. Hang in there; every day that you stay pregnant is a triumph. If you have him in the next few weeks, he'll likely need some time in the NICU, but with any luck he'll just be what they call a "feeder and grower." It'll take time for him to gain weight and to learn how to feed - they don't come out ready to nurse or take a bottle when they're preemie. It's a tough time, but you're in good hands having caught your early stages of labor and received the steroid shots! :hugs: Come ask questions any time.
  • It's great that you got steroid shots, they make a big difference.  At 24 weeks I was 3 cm dilated and but on hospital bedrest. I was able to make it two week. I've known alot of other people that have made it quite a while on bedrest.  My son is 4 now and hasn't had any problems from being so early.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

  • Your situation sounds a lot like mine did. At 30 weeks they found out by u/s that I was 3cm 100% effaced. Long story short I went into active labor the night of that u/s which stopped on it's own after getting an epi. I was put on strict bedrest and made it to 32w3d before DS was born. I did get two steroid shots at 30 weeks. I was told that the doctor's were very surprised that I was able to hold off delivery for another two weeks given my situation.

DS was 4lbs 13oz and spent exactly 5 weeks in the NICU. He didn't have any breathing issues, other the being on room air on CPAP and O2 for about 3 hours after birth as a precautionary measure. He had the usual suck/swallow/breath issues and lots of desats and A's & B's which ultimately was what kept him in the NICU for so long.

If you have any more questions or want me to be more specific about my situation let me know.

  • I'm responding mainly to the losing it comment, not your specific situation. When I've been in really stressful situations, one of the things I've done is break it down. If it's too much to think about what if.....and everything that follows up to wherever your mind takes you. Try to just get through the next 10minute, 1hour, a day. It gets much more managable and survivable. You can get through a lot 10 minutes at a time.

    Beyond that,

Best wishes and good luck to you, and your baby. There's definately reason to hope!

  • I just went through this same situation a week ago.  I was 30 weeks when I started leaking and was put on bedrest.  I was admitted last Sunday and ended up having my little one that Wednesday.  It was  like a bad dream when I found out I'd be having a premature baby.  I decided to take it one day at a time and each day I was in the hospital was a blessing.  I realized there's nothing I can do about the situation, so it wasn't worth stressing about.  I was happy that I got the 2 steroid shots before he came.  With me, I went into labor pretty quickly Wednesday evening and he came out so quick I didn't really have time to think about it.  He's in the NICU now and we visit him everyday.  It's hard not having him at home, but I know he's in good hands and that everything will turn out good in the end.  He gets stronger everyday and I thank God he's doing as well as he is!

If it makes you feel any better, when I was on bedrest, my doctor had told me that our first goal was to make it to 32 weeks because there is less chance of problems (which we didn't make and you're already there) and then the next goal was to make it 34 weeks.  Stay positive!  You'll have a beautiful baby when he/she decides to come!

  • It is frightening but it's great you got the shots. This was my first pregnancy and I threatened to deliver at 31 weeks. I was 1 cm dialated and 70% effaced. At 32 weeks I was back in the hospital with PTL and progressed to 75% effaced. One day later I went into labor and had an emergency c-section because I ended up dilating quickly (1 to 5 in 30 min) and my little man was breach.

When he was born he didn't need oxygen (they gave him the nasail one just to relieve some stress from his body but was only on it for about 12 hours) and he had no other major health concerns. He was in the NICU for 3 weeks. We brought him home just over 2 weeks ago and he's doing fabulous.

Try not to stress (easier said than done) and trust you are in good hands. At 32 weeks your little man will probably be okay.

  • (((hugs)))

DS was born at 32w6d and it was, hands down, the scariest thing i've ever experienced. i had bleeding from a previa from 22w on, so i lived with the idea that i might have a preemie for 10 weeks.  unfortunately, i didn't get the steroid shots in time to be fully effective. DS was on the CPAP for a day and the cannula for about 2 days.  he weighed 4lbs, 14oz and was in the NICU for 26 days, mainly learning how to eat.

that being said, DS is almost 17 months now and he is 100% perfect. no delays, no lung issues, no health issues. eats more than i ever thought possible. is at the top of the height and weight charts.

it is so scary and i'm so sorry that you're going through this. try to hang in there and keep you eye on the prize. i'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers! keep us updated!

  • I just went through this. On April 16th I was admitted to the hospital at 32 wks 1 day. I had contractions until Sunday morning, April 18th, when my little baby girl was born. She's doing fine. The steroid shots did wonders for her. She doesn't need any help breathing. The only thing we're working on is having her eat enough at each feeding.

She has surprised everyone. One of the nurses said that if she can keep eating the way she is and if her blood tests come back ok then maybe she can go home sometime next week.

I hope everything works out for you and your little boy. Good Luck.

  • 32 weeks is a wonderful milestone (though still so scary so big hugs to you).  sounds like your doctors are on top of things.  the steroid shots work wonders!  there are several women on here with 32 weekers that will hopefully respond, but from what I have seen, they tend to do pretty well so hopefully that provides a bit of comfort during this very scary & stressful time.  My DD was born at 28 weeks, 3 days & she had a rough road in the nicu but now she is home & doing well & is the light of our lives.  hang in there.  we are all here for you!
  • It is scary, but you're doing the right things.  It's great that  you've already gotten steroids, and just take it little by little from here.

All the best to you and your LO!
