Drive an hour to save $100?

I need new glasses and I want a pair of Rx sunglasses, too.

JCPenny optical has a coupon for 2 Pairs of glasses for $88, + $55 for the sunglasses.  Total = $143

There's a place here in town that I can get the two pairs for $290.

The closest JCPenny Optical is in Waco, about a 45 minute drive.  Would you drive there and back to save $143?

or anybody have a better idea how I can get cheap glasses?  :)

  • Yes, I would totally drive there. :-) I am all about saving some money.

  • After you factor in gas, how much are you saving? I know in my gas guzzler, that might be a deal breaker. Also, is it worth your time?

That said, I'm included to say yes! Make a day of it - go into Waco, get your glasses, have lunch somewhere, people watch, etc.

Or ... could you have them mailed to you? Or do you need to go pick out specific glasses still?

  • My car is pretty good on gas.  I need to pick out the frames, so I'd need to go there.  But I've never been to the Waco mall before, so I was thinking it would be fun to check it out.

    hmm...I might do it....

  • I would but then again, Waco is a pretty short trip from GT.  You could take the kids to the Waco Zoo.  Or, there is a great shopping center right off 35 & New Road that has shops that I don't even have here close to me like Ann Taylor Loft, Children's Place, Coldwater Creek, etc.  My parents live in Dallas and we always meet at the Panera in that shopping center.  There is also a Flying J gas station at that intersection... their gas is always the cheapest I've ever seen.

  • haha!  I love stopping in there too!  Going north on 35, exit #331 New Road.  Go back under the highway (that Flying J is right there on the turn around) but then get in your right hand lane. The shopping center will be on your right- I think it's called Central Texas Marketplace or something.  It actually is off of that big highway interchange the previous exit, but if you take that, you can't exit until you are past all the food and shopping.

The shopping is all outdoor so take the stroller... They have an Old Navy, Compass Trading, Books-A-Million, Marshall's,  a clean Ross, Bed Bath Beyond, James Avery, Starbucks, Camille's Cafe (I always want to try it but end up at Panera everytime!) and the others I mentioned earlier.

I've never been to the Waco mall.  You'll have to let me know if it's worth going next time I make the drive.  I never go to the mall anymore it seems!

PS- you can always stop in Salado along the way too.  I'm a sucker for Horsefeathers!
