Baby Names

Girl name help....

We're team green, but looking for ideas.

I love the name Abigail, but it may be a little bit too popular for me. What are people's thoughts on popular names? How popular is 'too popular'?

I also like the name Mary, and it was my Grandmother's name. She just died in August... and LO is due then. I think it'd be nice to name LO Mary, but I can't come up with a middle name that doesn't sound sort of like a cliche or like my daughter was born in a convent!

Mary Grace, Mary Anne... they all sound too 'nunnish' to me.

What do you guys think of Abigail Mary? I don't think it flows well.

Please share what you think of popular names (how popular does it have to be to be crossed off of your list), and if you can come up with a good middle name for Mary I'd love you forever!

Re: Girl name help....

  • My BFF used her grandmothers name which also was Mary as her LO's mn.  It doesn't flow that great, but not bad.  If it has meaning to you than use it as a mn.  I am not found of Abigail, but if you like it then use it.

  • I love the name Mary.  Not a fan of Abigail Mary though I do love the name Abigail.  What about Mary Abigail?  If you choose a nonbiblical middle name it definitely won't sound nunnish.

  • I think Abigail Mary is a great choice! It isn't my favorite combination, but the fact that Mary is honoring your grandmother is all that matters. We used family names for middle names, and I really like doing that.

As for popularity, you can see my boys' names to see how much that matters to me ;) We have a Logan (#18 in 2008) and a Jacob (#1). Honestly we loved Logan, and I didn't care about the popularity of it. For DS2, I was really trying to find something a little more unique. The problem was that all of my favorites weren't favorites of my husband, so we had to compromise somewhere. We went into the delivery room with Patrick, Noah and Jacob and we decided on Jacob. Ultimately all that mattered was that it was a name that we both loved and could agree on.

As for Mary, what about something with more than one syllable? I think that would help:

    Mary Jillian
    Mary Sophia
    Mary Elizabeth
Mary Claire (I think this is an adorable double name)
    Mary Katelyn
    Mary Lauren
    Mary Isabelle

  • What about Mary Elizabeth? I'm sure that could go under the 'nunnish' category, but after all, I think 'Mary' is what really does it. :)

I think Mary is a beautiful name, though, as well as Abigail. You could do Abigail Marie, which is taken from Mary.

  • Maybe consider derivatives and variations of Mary to give yourselves more options: Marie, Maria, Mariah, Maren, Marian, Miriam... Good luck!

  • For me, classic names that are widely used (Sarah, Caroline, Mary, Abigail, etc) are fine. It's the uber trendy (Madison/Addison and Riley/Kiley) names that bother me. ;)  I just don't get their appeal. I would try to steer clear of the Top 20, but if I LOVED a name, I would just go for it.

I really like Abigail and Mary. And I hear you about mary sounding nunnish with certain names, but I tend to like names w/an old-fashioned flair. Mary Alice? I think it sounds cute. Or what about Mary Elizabeth or Mary Elaina?

  • i think Abigail Mary goes very nice together
  • I like Mary Abigail. Mary is a beautiful name that isnt' used nearly enough.
  • I've always loved Marin or Maren, it's a form of Mary and Maren/Marin Abigail sounds nice.
  • Abigail is a great name.  If you really love it, I wouldn't let popular dissuade you.

Mary is sweet.  You could also consider one of these other forms of Mary: Marissa, Meredith, Miriam, Marian, Molly, Mia, May, Marianne, Marie, Marilyn, Marietta, Mara.

I really like Abigail May, Abigail Marie or Abigail Meredith.

  • I really like Abigail, and I say if you like something that much, who cares if it's popular?  I don't get that whole thing?  If it's a name that you and dh both love, popularity shouldn't matter.  Your child will have his/her own unique personality no matter what name he/she has.  Anyway, to answer your question though, how about Mary Abigail?  That sounds fine to me.
