SO Q: what classes did you take before your baby was born?

i was planning to take a lamaze class but dh commented the other day that he thought lamaze wasn't really done anymore, but i dont know what else people would do.   i'd also like to take an infant cpr class.  we're delivering at st. luke's in the med center if that matters.

  • We didn't do any classes and I don't feel like I missed anything.

    Ditto.

Except I already know infant CPR.  If I didn't know it I would have taken that. But that's the only one.

We did the hospital tour (worth it) and baby care (total waste of time)

  • Hospital tour/infant care (it was a combo thing) and then we took a childbirth class.  DH benefited from them as far as baby care goes.  We both benefited knowing the hospital policies, etc.
  • Breastfeeding and infant safety/CPR.

We only took a hospital tour. It was very helpful as my water broke at 3:30 in the morning and when we arrived at the hospital there was no one to be found, not even at the front desk. Thankfully during the tour, they tell you where to go once you arrive at the hospital.

I wish I had taken a breastfeeding class.

  • We took infant CPR (a necessity for my peace of mind), infant care (OK but not at all a must), and a c-section class (we knew I was having a c-section at that point). The c-section class was incredibly helpful because they walk you through the entire process and do the hospital tour. I am guessing a childbirth class would be similar in that they would discuss your hospital's policies, where to go when you get there, whether you'll have to move rooms at any point, etc.

  • After my first delivery I can remember really regretting that I hadn't taken a childbirth class.  I was mentally very unprepared for the pain and I had no coping techniques on board to help me manage the pain while I was laboring, which was scary.

I also wished I'd taken a breastfeeding class.  I had lots of books but a class might have been even more helpful.

  • Before Aidan we took one through the hospital that went over the basics from the stages of labor, hospital tour, infant care and breastfeeding.  While I don't think they were a must, I'm glad that we went - at minimum the hospital tour was great to have and I think the stages of labor was great for dh to hear about because it made him even more helpful with delivery.

If I was not already comfortable with infant emergency care I would have wanted a course covering that as well.

Ditto this, except our breastfeeding class was separate.

  • We didn't take a single class and I was fine.  I don't personally see a need.
  • We did the hospital tour and took breastfeeding and infant care classes. The infant care was kinda a waste of time. We watched a video on childbirth that we found very helpful and amusing (called Laugh and Learn about Childbirth).
