Would you read....

Charlotte's Web to an almost three year old?  A chapter at a time, of course.  I started reading it to DD #1 and she likes it and stays interested for several chapters at a time...but now I'm a little worried about her being to young for some of the "themes" of the book.  WDYT?

Re: Would you read....

  • I would.

But if she's too young for some of the themes, she probably just won't get it and it won't be a big deal.

I should add - I'm pretty free with what I will let my kids read (now and in the future), so I may not be the best person to ask.  There will be pretty much no restrictions in our house when it comes to reading.

Also - Jackson has seen that movie and enjoyed it and didn't ask any questions or anything.

  • Sure, if the kid seemed interested.  My DD went to Disney and is now obsessed with Swiss Family Robinson, so we're reading a version of that.  You know, the Great Illustrated Classic one, with the picture on every other page.

  • Hmm, ok good to know.  I love to read to her, and of course it's a great book.  But even right at the beginning when Mr. Arable is going to kill the pig DD had a thousand questions about why he was going to kill the pig etc, etc.  And then because I have a hard time giving her succinct answers and talk too much (lol) I start talking about pigs and farmers and what we eat and runts and I think I did fine and she doesn't seem upset....but I thought I'd get a few opinions before I carried on.  We just take the book with us and read a chapter here and there.
  • I like this post. It's giving me new ideas for storytime. DS (almost 4) loves to read, and I never thought of starting him on chapter books. That'll keep it interesting for me too. Berenstain Bears are cute and all, but those illustrated chapter books sound like a great idea!

Right?  I know it's got to be interesting to you too!  E.B. White also has The Trumpet of the Swan and Stuart Little, also great books.

    I would absolutely.
  • My only concern is that I would cry while reading the end (I am one of those people who cries at commercials and such, so this is not outside the realm of possibility)

I can't WAIT until DS is old enough for me to read chapter books...EB White, Roald Dahl, CS Lewis, Harry Potter... It is going to be so much fun!

  • My DD has the DVD & loves it she does cry during parts but she still asks to watch it.

  • I just tried this last week. We got through about 7 chapters before she became totally uninterested and specifically asked to NOT read it at nightSad

But I don't think it's because of the themes. I think she just likes books with a lot more pictures still.
