Am I being a cheapskate about this?

The director of our office is retiring at the end of April. We decided to get him a gift and the lady that was going to purchase it said it would like $10/person. He does a lot of bird watching and hates squirrels so she bought this squirrel proof bird feeder. Anyway the envelope came around for us to pay for it and it was $20 a person!!! There are 10 people throwing in for this thing, so that means it was $200!!

She ordered it online so if she saw it was that much money, I think she should have asked everybody if that price per person was ok with us before she got it. I know it's not that huge of an amount, but I don't have that much money to be throwing away on somebody's retirement gift. That's a box of diapers!!!

  • No I completely agree. I would add $10, and tell them that's all you've got to give if they even ask.
  • no you are not being cheap.  that would not be OK and if she caught me on a crabby day i probably would bring it up to her.  there are few people in my lives that i buy gifts for and i don't like throwing around money.  of course the wuss in me would just cough it up and grumble to myself. ;)

  • No, I don't blame you. She had to know how much it would be before asking everyone anyway.

  • I would just put in my $10.00 and leave it at that.  I don't like being told how much to give for a gift.

  • Nope.  At work we don't set limits.  We just ask for contributions and people put in anywhere from $5-20 and we work with what we have.  And for this person to not give you guys a heads-up is lame.  It's a CONTRIBUTION not a PAYMENT.  Put in the $10 and if they give you grief about it explain that you were told it would be only $10 so you only allotted $10 out of your budget for it.

    this exactly!

  • No, I agree with you.  $20 is out of line ... she should have run it past everyone if it was going to be more than $10.
  • I'm glad I'm not the only who feels like that is a lot, especially since it was never discussed. I'm telling them the agreed on amount was $10 and that's all I have to contribute. Thanks!
