stomach bug/food poisioning question (may be stupid, but I need to know)

So I am an ebf and am worried about getting my dd sick. I don't know if I have a stomach bug or food poisoning but I have been in the bathroom all morning, Imodium hasn't helped. I haven't thrown up, but get nauseated when I stand up. It's made it difficult to take care of dd today, but most of all I'm afraid that she will get sick with whatever I have because she is ebf.

What should I do? Can she catch it through my bm?

  • I had this exact sickness last Tuesday into Wednesday.  DS did not get sick (and I still bf him during the day while I was home from work since he refuses to take a bottle if I am anywhere near him).  It did, however, put a damper on my supply because I was not able to drink or eat ANYTHING for 2 days.  I pumped and fed him a bunch of extra times over the weekend to make up for it, and now my supply is back up to normal!

  • Thanks, I have been drinking lots of fluids and ate some crackers so I can try to stay hydrated, but luckily I have a small freezer stash jic. I hope she doesn't catch it though, I would hate for her to be this miserable.
  • If anything giving her your milk will KEEP her from getting it, since she'll pick up your antibodies.

  • What's making you sick isn't in your milk, what is making you better is.

I was going to say this exactly.  Keep BFing (just try and keep your fluid intake up as much as possible.)  Feel better!

  • KEEP DOING IT! I was sick as a dog, couldn't take care of DS so my mom came over to help. she brought him to me in bed every 2.5/3 hours to nurse. It actually made me feel better for like 5 mins each time (maybe the hormones released) and DS never got sick. I'm fairly certain that my bfing him during and leading up to (because he had ALREADY been exposed to it before i even knew) prevented him from getting sick.He received antibodies unique to the illness. (and even if it's not a bug, and food poisening, that is not transferred in BM)

downside, i threw my guts up, and the last 2 times was just straight water. my supply tanked for a couple days until I was rehydrated

  • DH and I both came down with something within hours of each other.  It was horrible.  We called the pedi's office and they assured me that even if it was a virus and not just food poisoning, that it would be beneficial to bf baby anyway so he can get the antibodies to whatever the stomach bug was.  Hope you get to feeling better.
