Babies: 0 - 3 Months

anyone have a very forceful letdown?

Anyone's breastmilk let down so fast that LO has to gulp to drink it. What are you doing to manage it? DS gulps it down and I can only feed him for a minute and then I have to burp him and sometimes have to take him off and catch some of the breastmilk that is running down my chest until it slows down enough for him to drink it w/o taking in so much air. I have talked with a LC and we are trying to bring my supply down a little and feed him only on one side per feeding or one side in a 3 hour period as he cluster feeds alot. I am also burping him 2-3 times per feeding.

Re: anyone have a very forceful letdown?

  • During my letdown I can shoot milk across the room. haha  Now that Henry is older he can usually handle it.  I always keep a burp cloth near me and if he pops off or is having trouble I will letdown into it.  You could always let down in a burp cloth, but that just seems like a lot of wasted milk.

  • I think your baby will get used to it as he gets older. I have a forceful letdown most of the time as well, but she's pretty used to it now!

I know he will get used to it but I feel bad as he takes in so much air it makes him gassy and he spits up like 1/2 of it. Sort of sad at 1 week old.

  • It is like he is choking at first. I am starting to try different positions during breastfeeding. I am putting him on top with me leaning back (Australian position is the name ?) for a few minutes - burp him and then moving him into other positions. I still burp him every time I change his position.

  • yes! Go to either kellymom or LLI website they have suggestions

I did block feeding for 1-2 days and basically fixed it. Google block feeding.

  • Here is the link to Kellymom's page on how to deal with a forceful let down

  • Thanks ladies. We have been doing the block feeding for about 24 hours now and we are noticing a little less spit up...I think this along with the extra burping is starting to help. Thanks for your ideas and help.
  • I've been battling this too.  DD usually will unlatch herself when it is too much to handle and she too will have milk running all down her.  I just leave her off for a little bit then latch her back on.  Sometimes we have to do this a few times.  She has started to manage it better, but she does still get too much and will even start to cough at times.  I feel horrible like I'm choaking her.

Your LO should get used to it.  I did completely stop pumping once we realized the problem and that has helped that way I wasn't making the problem worse.  Just stick with it and unlatch him as necessary.  It should regulate out.
