Terbutaline ?

I started having a lot of cramping yesterday morning. It was just constant for hours, nothing timeable. I got in to see the nurse practitioner and she checked my cervix, it's still high and closed thankfully. She hooked me up to the contraction monitor and I was having some contractions, and baby is fine. She prescribed some Terb and I ended up taking two total yesterday (1 every four hours as needed). I felt fine when I went to bed last night and this morning, but I was just out running errands and the cramping came back. I just took another pill. For those of you who have been on it before, I have some questions. How long did you have to take it? How often did you need it? All the time? Or did it come and go and you have to just try to stay on top of it? I'm a bit nervous since my son was born at 36 weeks, but in that case my water broke (pPROM) and I had no contractions so this is different and I'm just feeling really anxious about it all. Anyone care to share your experience with it? Thanks!

Re: Terbutaline ?

  • I was on it for PTL. My contractions were 3 min appart, cervix dialated to 1cm and I was 70% effaced at 31 weeks. I was on terb and bed rest after spending about 3 days in the hospital on magnesium sulfate. I had to take it every 4 hours around the clock. There was no "as needed" on my perscription. It didn't help though because I was back in the hospital a week later for PTL and delivered at 32w1d.

I would call your doctor and make sure your concerns are addressed. I find it a bit weird that they perscribed it "as needed" but your contractions may not have been as bad as mine.

  • It didn't actually say 'as needed' on the prescription, the nurse practitioner said to take it as long as I'm having contractions...so as needed. I just called the on-call doc and she said I could take two at a time since they dosage was pretty low, so we'll see how it goes. Thanks for sharing your story!

  • Good luck. Terb is not fun. I hope the contractions go away for at least 3 more weeks!

I was on procardia around the clock and then terb as needed. the terb would usually stop my contractions cold, but I was also getting a shot of it.

  • I was on it for PTL and PROM (leaking). Because of the PROM, I wasn't released from the hospital, I was kept there on bedrest. I was 90% effaced and 1 cm dilated at 31 weeks when the leaking started. They kept me on Terb for another week and gave me steriod shots since I was already leaking, had a positive FFN and then knew I could deliver at any time or they'd have to take him at any time if my fluid levels go too low. He came at 33w.
