What is the difference between 6 and 6x?

I'm trying to find a new tankini suit for DD1.  She has a really long torso and the size 5 (from Lands End last year) is getting short.  Naturally, they are already out of stock in some sizes--I REALLY dislike them for this.

I could probably find the tankini combo I wanted if I mix 6 and 6x.  How big a size difference is there between 6 and 6x?

I thought 6x was closer to a size 7. At Carters girls sizes are from 4-6x, and boys sizes are from 4-7. I think 6x is just a size bigger than a 6.

Honestly, I've never really noticed a big a big difference between 6 and 6x. If anything, the 6x was just  a bit bigger, but not by a lot.
