Alabama Babies

I got my first real test today at trying to not care about what others say...

and I think I failed horribly.

Yesterday I posted Aubrey's 6 month stats as my facebook status update and one of my cousins commented on it saying simply that her granddaughter was 11 months old and weighed 17lbs and was still wearing 3-6 month clothes...it irritated me because I felt like she was insinuating Aubrey weighed too much for 6 months old (she is 16lbs 9oz (60th percentile) and she is 26 and a half inches long (80th percentile)...her pedi said she was long and lean.  She doesn't look like she weighs 16lbs.  Aubrey isn't mobile yet and I know that her weight gain will more than likely slow down over the next 6 months especially once she is mobile.

I basically just replied with that...I probably should have just let it go.  I guess there is always next time.

Seriously though when does what other people say about your baby stop making you feel like you are getting a big fat F in the parenting department?

Re: I got my first real test today at trying to not care about what others say...

  • Sorry, but the fact that an 11 month old in 3-6 mo. clothes is seriously disturbing!!  I saw her message...it was odd and she pretty much sounded like an AW considering the fact that she never mentioned your daughter at all.

As for this....ummm, pretty much never, lol!  I think now, though that I've put my foot down with enough people (and given them the "back-the-eff-off" look), that most just leave me alone.

  • Granted, she may have just been making a comment with no ill intentions. But what an ignorant comment if she actually meant that your baby was big! Babies come in all sizes. GK has always been a large baby. It has nothing to do with your parenting!

  • Sometimes people just like to hear themselves talk or in this case type...I know its easier said than done but please don't let it get to you...its not worth the time or energy...give it to Aubrey instead!

As far as what others have to say I'm quick to tell them that they had their turn and now it's mine...I'll make my own mistakes(just as they did) and learn from them...or you can just tell them to eff off!

  • It's hard.  I think also when you're on the defense about something already, any comments exaserbate the issue.  Like for us, Avery is 18 months and not walking yet.  She's close, there is nothing wrong with her, she just needs to let go.  I feel like I'm always defending that and any comments, positive OR negative bother me.  I take them as extra critical.  I know I shouldn't, I just do.  (not that you're on the defense about Aubrey - those stats are perfect!)

and people get so hung up about the percentiles.  60th percentile means if you lined 100 babies up in a row, that Aubrey would be heavier than 59 of them and 40 of them would be heavier than she is... To me, that is perfectly Average and normal!!!  What is NOT normal, like Fran said, is an 11 month old still wearing 3-6 month clothing.

I'm sorry you were offended though :(

  • Yes, I wouldn't let that bother you at all. She is perfectly healthy and normal. However, as others said, I would be more concerned by the fact that the 11 month old is still wearing 3-6 month clothing...
  • I saw that comment on facebook. I'm not sure why she would post that, but I highly doubt that an 11 month old is still wearing 3-6 month sizes unless she was born premature or comes from very petite parents.

All babies are different. Aubrey is the size she is supposed to be.

(FYI, I think most parents are sensitive when it comes to comments about their kids. It took me a while to get used to comments I get about K being so skinny. She is 31 inches tall and still is only 18.5 pounds at 1 year. I have come to accept that she is just who she is and as long as my pedi says she's healthy, she we are fine!)
