Diaper questions. Help please.

My MIL bought us a box of 1-2 diapers from costco. She said that that's the size we would need at first. On the box it says up to 15 lbs.. but I haven't opened them yet, they are still at her house. Is this right? I thought we needed to buy N .. newborn size. So I told DH this when we were out last night and he just kept saying.. well that's not what my mom told us. Frustrating.

Maybe they are right.. I know target up and up brand didn't have size N when we were there, so DH just said I told you so and the costco brand could be the same way. The sample we have of N and 1's though seem so different in size. So now I am confused.

Also.. DH keeps insisting that the size wouldn't matter much anyways.. and doesn't understand how a boys diaper would leak. This is my first, but I disagree.. and I just don't know what to say to this. Another also.. from what I've looked at and seen used with my niece and nephew, I wanted to get pampers. Does brand matter? I know different things work for different babies. I just feel like DH is trying to just be cheap about this.. and I know that diapers get expensive, but I don't want to go through more hassle than it should be. I thought I had read up on diapers enough to know what I would need.. and now DH and MIL have me confused again.

To sum it up in case you don't want to read my rambeling.. I need more information on sizes and brand of diapers.. and any other diaper info would be helpful.

Re: Diaper questions. Help please.

  • Good question. As far as brand, each baby will react differently, and you will find one that you and your LO prefer. And for size, depending on the birth weight, you may need size N for at least a week or two until LO gains enough weight to fit in 1 or 1-2. Just as a reference, my BFF has an 11 month old who is wearing size 3. You can't go wrong by stocking up on size 1-2 but I would be wary of buying in bulk until you know LO's brand preference and how he/she reacts.

  • I am a first time Mom too.  But there are newborn sizes and I think most babies need them for atleast alittle while.  So I am getting a bag of Pampers newborns, because several people have said that they were great.  I also think my MIL is getting me some size 1.  Once he is alittle older, I will try some off brands to see what works for us.
  • Size does matter. If your baby is little, then size one might be too big, You dont wanna get TOO many newborn sizes though, cuz more than likely they baby will grow out of them pretty quickly.

About brands, i think it's just your personal preference. I dont use off brand diapers until the baby is older. I use Pampers for at least the first few months, and then MIGHT switch to Luvs or the Up and Up brand, depending on the baby and how those diapers fit them and control leaks.

    Hope this helps!

  • From my experience with babysitting other people's babies and talking with friends, you can "get away" with using the costco/target/cvs brand diapers when they are very little, since when they wet the diaper it isn't all that much at first. At my babyshower everyone brought a pack of diapers and I have a lot of Pampers Swaddlers and Huggies (i've heard a lot of good things about the Pampers Swaddlers btw) but also have a few packs of cvs/target/costco brand diapers. Our Pampers and Huggies are in size N, 1, 2, 3 etc.. and the Target brand diapers are in size 1, weight limit 8-14 lbs. which is the same as Pamper's and Huggies size N (also 8-14 lbs). Hope this helped you out!
  • I'm not presently a mother, but from everything I know, I can moderately answer some of your questions.

They do make newborn sizes, but perhaps not all brands make them. The 1-2 size is actually a good purchase. If you have a large child, the NB might be too small and then you have a box of diapers you can't use. Virtually every child (except the 19 pound porker you hear about on CNN) will go through size 1. If your child is smaller, you may have to go out and buy NB for the first couple of weeks, but those 1-2's will not go to waste.

Everything I've read here says brand does matter. But everyone's experience can be different (even from child to child). My sister uses Luvs during the day and Huggies overnights. My best friend uses Pampers. Neither are willing to switch brands because they have found what works for them. I have diapers in virtually every brand that I plan on trying to see what works. Some moms swear by the generic brand too. Give them all a shot!

No idea about boys leaking. I'll leave that to someone qualified.

  • Unless you have a pretty big baby, the newborn size is nice for a couple of weeks max.  To be honest, I can't remember how many boxes of NB we went through with #1, but with #2 we have an opened box from a friend with just a couple missing and I won't buy anymore until those are just about gone, if needed.  Otherwise, we've been stocking up on Huggies 1's - that's our brand of preference.

  • Size does matter... in general there are weight ranges on the diapers depending on size... but this does not mean that every baby is shaped the same.

If I were you, I would say thank you for the size 1-2s, we will definately use them, but I prefer to at least have a small bag of newborn diapers on hand incase baby is too little.  The newborn sizes of most brands also have cut outs for the umbilical cord.

However, brand does not matter for the most part.  I worked in a daycare and we provided diapers for all of the children there and we used Luvs, they were affordable, and not one child was ever allergic to them in the entire time that I worked there.  They contain leaks like you wouldn't believe and we rarely had blow outs, even in the infant room.  Obviously certain generic diapers will be better than others... but if I were you I would never be above buying cheaper diapers.  Your child poops and pees in them.  They do not have to be the most expensive.  They just have to work.

  • I would buy at least one pack of NB diapers. My DD was is NB's for about 2 weeks, if not a little longer. She was 6lbs 14oz at birth. We used Pampers swaddlers when she was small, and then used the Pampers cruisers when she was a little older.

I wouldn't get rid of the 1-2 diapers, you will need them eventually but they may be too big for baby when he/she first comes home.

As far a brands go, we tried a few different kinds but always preferred the pampers.  Even if we hated a certain brand of diaper we would suck it up and use the pack until it was gone, we just wouldn't buy anymore of that kind of diaper.

  • I stock up on many sizes.  I used newborn size for maybe 1 1/2 to 2 weeks max and she weighed 7lbs.  I stuck with Pampers in the beginning with DD and then switched to generic brands when she got a little older.  Most stores allow you to do an exchange on unopened diapers without a receipt.
  • My son still wears newborn diapers (up to 10lbs , i think). He will be in these until he goes through what sizes N we have left, but up until very recently, the size 1s went practically up to his chest. So, no, those probably wouldn't have worked for us. DS is 4  weeks old and 9lbs 10ozs. We originally had a box of 84 ct. N swaddlers (which we love!). He went through those shortly after we left the hospital. I went out and bought a 66 ct size N in luvs. We also received a 36 ct N swaddlers. This is all we have had for size N and we are almost out. As for brand: so far, we prefer Swaddlers just because they are softer and smell better. Luvs really aren't much different though and I would buy those again just to save $. The only time DS has leaked is when his penis isn't tucked down, if its pointed upwards, he will pee all over his back no matter what brand he is wearing. As for poop blowouts, I can't say what works better because he is the type that only poops every few days. When this does happen,  they are huge poops and a little leaks out each time, but that is honestly inevitable.

Size 1-2, I think are just a little bigger than size ones. I believe they are for transitioning between sizes. We have a 228 ct box, but I haven't opened them yet. I wish they had a size N-1, that would fit DS perfectly now!

We use size 1 diapers right now for at night since he goes awhile between changes. I've been ripping open all my bags of diapers to try each brand out (we stocked up, I would recommend it ). So far, Huggies lil snugglers, Luvs, Swaddlers, Swaddlers dry Max, and Pampers baby Dry have all produced no messes or leaks throughout the night.

Sorry this is sooo long. I would recommend buying various packs of diapers in the months before LO arrives. I saved up coupons and bought jumbo packs of different brands. A $3 huggies coupon plus a $1 target coupon for huggies equals a jumbo package of pretty cheap diapers. We havent had to buy diapers (or wipes) yet, and don't anticipate having to buy any for awhile. I know this isn't a  popular opinion, but I am very glad I did this in my pregnancy.

    Hope that helps!

  • Most likely you WILL need the Newborn (N) size for a while in the beginning.  It could be less than a month.  I would have some on hand.  As for brand, many babies are sensitive to specific brands (get rashes, etc) OR they leak so personally, I wouldn't stock up until you get your baby home and start figuring out what is what.  Our son came home in Pampers so we used those for awhile and then when I realized he was getting a rash from them, we switched to Seventh Generation and then to Huggies and have been using Huggies ever since.  I would hold on to the size 1-2 diapers that you were given and pick up some N size for the very beginning...

    Good luck!

  • I don't get why your DH doesn't believe boys' diapers might leak?  Because the pee points up instead of down?  Leakage is based on volume and gaps in the diapers, in my experience, not gender.  I would point out to him that the looser the diaper on the waist and legs, the more likely you are to get leaks.  Waist gaps are particularly problematic for boys - if their little pee-pees are pointed up, and the waist of the diaper is too loose, you might get squirted in the face!
  • I like Pampers the best. And boys do leak, a lot!  I had every brand of diapers from my shower so I got to test them all out and we liked Pampers by far the best.  However, we like Huggies wipes the best.....
  • With my son we bought one huge box of newborn Swaddlers.  After that it was on to size 1 Swaddlers.  & we probably only needed to buy 2 huge boxes of those until it was onto size 2.  I should mention that the first box of size 2 we bought were Swaddlers and by that time/size Swaddlers don't cut it anymore.  It was right around 3 months when he moved to size 2.  At 3 months he was also sleeping through the night and would wake up SOAKED.  We switched to Baby Dry and that got him through the night just fine.

I agree.  I worked in the infant room at a daycare in college, so I changed a LOT of diapers.  Everyone that worked with me agreed - the Pampers diapers and the Huggies wipes were the best.

  • Size 1-2 is a little big for right away. I always tell people to stock up on size 1 and a few newborn. It just depends on how big the baby is and how he grows. My son was only in newborn for 2 weeks. He went through size 1 pretty fast too. He was a chunker the first 6 months though! I think I remember I still wanted him in Pampers Swaddlers, but had to move up to size 3 (which are cruisers) before he was cruising! But he stayed in size 3 and then 4 for a long time. In fact, he has such a little waist now that size 4 still fit him at 2.5 (he only wears them at night).

As for brand, Pampers are the best in my opinion, but every parent and every child is different. DS broke out whenever I tried Huggies. For a while, I used Publix brand diapers on him but then when summer came and he drank a lot more, I found they leaked too much.

I've had some friends who loved one brand for one child and another brand for another child. I suggest buying small packages of different brands and trying them all out!

  • I just opened our box of size 1-2. They about a cm smaller than size 2s and a tad bigger than size 1s...So they will not be the correct size for a just out of the hospital baby.

  • I would suggest starting off with the Newborn baby diaper at first. Size 2 for a newborn doesn't sound like a good idea. If the diaper is loose fitting it will leak. It's important to find a diaper that is very absorbent. I have found that Cuties Baby Diapers have all the sizes, high absorbency, and are hypoallergenic (which is great for the babies skin).
