Infertility

IUI Question...

So I went to the fertility doctor today to have blood taken for a pregnancy test. Of course it came back negative. Not what I wanted to hear at all. I really wanted that Christmas/New Years baby.  My doctor doesnt want to change my meds, he just told me to think about adding an IUI. So I think i know what they do for that. If you've had that done, how easy was it for you? What should I except? Did your insurance cover any of it?

any advice would help, I dont know whether or not to do it.

Re: IUI Question...

  • I take it you are being monitored on whichever med you are on?

If so, all that would really change for you (since you are already being monitored) is that you would trigger--if you aren't already--and then you'd go in for your IUI after. Your DH will have to provide a sample, which they will wash and then inject the sample into your uterus. Really very simple.

My insurance does not cover any portion of IUIs.

  • Without knowing what you are currently doing or what your diagnosis is it's kind of hard to give advice. I'll just give you my experience -

I take 50mg of Clomid CD5-9, have an u/s on CD12 and then do a trigger shot that day or the following day depending on the size of my follies at the u/s. The IUI itself is quick, similar to a pap. The lab washes your DHs sample and inserts it into your uterus with a syringe/catheter (sp?) type instrument. My insurance covers 50% of the procedure and monitoring so I end up paying about $300 OOP per cycle I think. The Clomid is usually about $20 and the trigger is $120 (OOP)

    Good luck!

  • IUI is easy.

It feels kind of like a pap smear.

My insurance covered it because I have infertility coverage. I don't know anything about your policy so I don't know if yours would cover it or not.

As far as whether you should do an IUI or not, that decision is up to you. It does put better quality sperm in the right place at the right time, but nothing is guaranteed. Good luck.
