twin mommies, delivery?

just curious after my OB appt yesterday...my dr said I could elect to have a C-section and "almost no-one chooses to go vaginal".  I would like to try to have a vaginal delivery if possible, I'm just wondering what everyone else did or is doing.

So.  Did you elect to have a C?  or Did you try to have a vaginal delivery but were unable for some reason?  or Did you deliver vaginally?

 Thanks!

Re: twin mommies, delivery?

  • I delivered vaginally and that was my intention the whole time.  My OB said she wouldn't do a C-section unless it was necessary.

  • I chose to deliver them both vaginally and it worked just fine.  One ended up breech but it really wasn't too bad.

  • I would have loved to deliver vaginally.  Both my babes were head down when my water broke so I was thrilled--thought I'd be able to do it.  Unfortunately, after 24 hours of labor I was only at 9cm and my doc didn't want to wait any longer.  C-section it was.

  • UGH... I will save you from my long-winded version of my opinion on this (this topic comes up somewhat often).  Basically it seems like many doctors try to talk (or even scare) MoMs into choosing c-sections when they're not always necessary or even the best way to go.

I delivered our identical girls vaginally and it went great.  Great recovery, and we all left the hospital the day after I delivered them.

  • I had a c-section b/c A was breech and B was transverse and there were other complication at time of delivery.

My OB said she would have attempted vaginal birth if A was head down and B was not a lot bigger and there were no other issues.

  • I had a csection.  baby b was breech and I did not want them to try and turn her.  I had no problems at all.

  • Sorry to butt in - I just wanted to let you know that my aunt had twins vaginally with no epi or anything (because she is afraid of needles!) and everything worked out great. I had a scheduled C-section with my singleton because of a medical issue that I have and if I could go back in time I would NEVER do it again. The recovery for me was not great and I feel like I was 'robbed' of the birthing experience.

    JMHO...

  • Glad you posted!  My OB actually mentioned c-section yesterday, already!  I'm terrified of labor all together, but wanted to at least try vaginal delivery.  Hopefully babies cooperate when time comes.

  • I had a c-section.  A was head down, but B was breech and bigger.  It went well and there were no complications.
  • We just talked about this last week, I think, and we'd all probably agree that "almost no one does vaginally with twins" is an inaccurate statement.  I have every intention of avoiding a c/s if possible.  If it's safe and you want it, I hope you get a similar experience.

  • I wanted vaginal, but had pre-e and baby b was breech so I had an emergency c. My sister had her twins vaginally, naturally w/o drugs...did fabulous. Do what YOU want it's your birth.
  • Honestly, that kind of talk would have me looking for a new OB - even if I wanted a c-section.  It tells me that OB either doesn't have much experience with twins or is scared of lawsuits or both.

The fact is nearly 50% of twins are born vaginally.  Assuming Baby A is head down and there aren't other complications, vaginal delivery is best for mother and babies.  It is my biggest pet peeve when OBs try to scare MoMs to be into unnecessary c-sections.

That being said, I actually don't have a problem with a MoM choosing an elective c-section - but I want her to do so knowing all the facts.

I'm very thankful that I had a peri (whom I saw exclusively) that allowed elective c-sections, but encouraged vaginal deliveries whenever possible.  My vaginal delivery wasn't the easiest thing in the world, but I think it was best for my girls and my recovery was an absolute breeze.

  • As of now, both of my twins are head down if they stay that way we will definitely be trying for a vaginal birth. My Dr. is very supportive of us choosing a vaginal birth as long as both babies are head down.

  • I delivered vaginally.  I saw a group of doctors.  Some recommended/pushed for a section and the others would do a section if that's what I wanted, but I wanted to avoid it if possible.  I had them w/in 9 mins of each other and felt great immediately afterwards.
  • Both of my boys were head down and I delivered vaginally after 36 hours of induced labor.  My OB was willing to try if B was breech, but not if A was.  I am so glad I chose vaginal.  I had no tears and I am already in pre-pregnancy clothes

  • I delivered vaginally.  My practice wouldn't refuse an elective c-section to any of their twin mamas, but they really prefer low intervention if possible.  I think saying "almost no-one chooses to go vaginal" is a bit of an exaggeration.

  • I never had a choice - Baby A was breech my entire pregnancy so I had to have a c-section.  My doctor seemed happy with that though because she said she thought my body would have a hard time delivering the two vaginally since they were a pretty decent size.

  • I had a VBAC. Both were head down. I had a few nurse friends of mine suggest NOT to do it, but I stuck with it and it worked out for me.

Very inaccurate! I saw 7different OBs and a peri during pregnancy (5 at one practice and then just switched practices) and I found the ones who tried to tell me that most MoMs choose C-sections were also the ones who pushed C-sections by trying to "sell" them, not mentioning benefits of vaginal delivery at all, and stressing the possibility of vaginally delivering one and then having to have a C-section for the second twin (which only happens 5% of the time). Well, of course most of your patients will choose C-sections if you put it that way and they don't do their own research!

In the US, 50% of twins are born vaginally. Mine were. Baby B flipped to breech during delivery (and had been flipping back and forth between breech and vertex from 31w on) but fortunately I had transferred to an OB who was comfortable and experienced with breech extractions for Baby B's, so that was no problem.

  •  My OB's were pro-vaginal delivery all the way and that is what I tried for.  I did end up with a c-section, but that was because of failure to fully dilate, even after mass amounts of pitocin.  If you want to try for vaginal, I say go for it, it's YOUR choice, not the doctors.  (this is provided that the babies are in a good position for it, obviously)
  • I delivered vaginally and it was successful. B was  footling breech and almost bigger, and they were able to rotate him with no problem. I didn't even have any stitches (which were terrible with my 3rd degree tearing with my first). If you want vaginal and it is possible for you, fight for it. As someone told me, be your own advocate.

  • I had a vaginal delivery. I was very close to a c-section though.
  • I had a C because Gracie was breech.  Otherwise I would have tried to go vaginally...even though I have to admit it made me nervous (the thought of it).

So true!  And I would, but I see an awesome peri too (much more often than the OB) so I feel like I am still in good hands.  My OB will "let" me try vaginally, she's just "surprised I'd want to".  Oh well.  She can be surprised.

Thanks for all the responses, glad I'm not alone!!

  • I wanted to deliver vaginally but baby A wouldn't rotate around and it was delaying labor so I ended up with a c-section. My OB was all for me delivering vaginally as long as baby A was head down, which he was.
