Babies: 9 - 12 Months

wheat ?

So I know you are supposed to avoid wheat until 8-9 months (and some say longer), but from everything I read it's safe to introduce after all other grains have been introduced.

DD has had rice, oats, barley, mixed grains... should I still wait another month, or can I try it out? I noticed her Earth's Best Green bean casserole is made with wheat flour (is that different?) and she loves it and never has had a reaction. She wanted a bite of my toast last night, but I didn't give her any because we only have wheat bread, we also only eat wheat pasta.

TIA

Re: wheat ?

  • My husband has celiac's and cannot eat barley or oats because many of them contain wheat flour or gluten.  If she was ok with the other grains then I would think that wheat if fine at this point. What did pedi say?

  • I'm pretty sure you only have to hold off on wheat if there's intolerance or allergy in the family. I was told by pedi the boys should wait to have wheat until 1 yr old, because I was allergic to wheat as a child.
  • I have Celiac's so can't eat wheat (or rye or barley).  If she has had the other grains with no reaction, you are probably good to go with introducing wheat.  Just watch for a reaction.
