What can they still NOT eat at 10 months old?

I've been avoiding a lot of the food that the guys weren't supposed to eat when they were way little, like cow's milk & stuff like that.   And was just informed recently that all these banned foods are now ok.  I missed the memo.  So what foods are still a no-go?  Peanut butter.  What else?

  • I think just honey and peanut butter.

  • honey, peanut butter, shellfish, nuts, and cows milk are what our pediatrician told us to stay away from until one year. He still wants him to stay away from nuts and peanut butter (he told us 2+) because the risk of allergies is so high with those and it's not something that goes away over time. I'm not sure why introducing it later on would help, but I don't feel like doing the research to find out so we'll just hold off :)
  • Cheese & yogurt are ok, but not actual milk?  I don't really get that either.

  • It has something to do with the way the proteins are digested, I think. I believe that some lactose intolerant people can have cheese and yogurt, but not milk.
  • My Ped (both old and new) said honey, shellfish, egg yolk, and milk (but yes dairy ok) until one year.  They said no peanuts/peanut butter until 2. Not sure why dairy is ok before one but milk is not?

We have not followed this though since we have no family history of food allergies.  We started eggs (white and yolk) around 10 months and I am plnning on transitioning him to milk next week.  I will hold off on peanut butter until after one and probably closer to 2, which is now the AAP rec.

    Ditto this.

But we started cows milk at 11 months.

You won't believe this...my mom took me off formula and onto cow's milk at 6 months old.  Its a miracle I'm so healthy :)

  • Are strawberries ok before 1 year?  For some reason I thought they weren't, but maybe that's one of the foods that's now ok.

Whole Milk, as a drink, does not contain enough nutrients, vitamins or minerals for it to adequately sustain a growing infant.  We are told to NOT give baby milk until after 1 year of age mostly because milk is NOT enough to meet all of baby's specific nutritional requirements during the first year of life.  Babies should be on breast milk or formula or a combo of both until after 1 yr old. Here are 2 reasons why Yogurt is different:

note Unlike Whole Cow Milk beverage, your baby is not at risk of formula/breast milk being replaced by Yogurt or Cheese.  The medical community worries that if Whole Cow milk is introduced to an infant prior to 1 year old, that parents would stop formula and/or breastfeeding and use Milk as the replacement. This would possibly be dangerous to your baby's health.

note Lactose is already broken down with the culturing of the yogurt or cheese and milk proteins are either removed or limited thus it is typically easier to digest; people with lactose intolerance often are be able to handle cheese and/or yogurt without trouble.  The same is true for some people with a milk protein (either to the casein or the whey) allergy.

I asked our pedi about this at the 9 mo. well check and he gave us the greeen light on shellfish.  I think it's funny that we go to the same practice, but see different docs and got different answers on this one Smile

Oh and ditto on the processing whole milk v. cheese/yogurt/etc.  DH is lactose intolerant and he can do cheeses and other milk-products.  But you don't want to be within a mile radius of him if he drinks a glass of whole milk.  Ick!

  • Just ditto-ing the lactose thing.  I can't have milk, just soy, but I'll eat the heck out of sharp cheddar cheese :)

  • My pedi is conservative, but she said no strawberries, eggs, nuts, honey  or cow's milk (other dairy is ok) until 1 year and no shellfish until 3 years (but that is because DH is allergic).

That is funny! Shows how much of it is a judgment call on the part of the doc :) And I think he told us that list at his 6 month check - I never asked again after that.
