Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Is anyone using a nanny?

We have a daycare lined up for LO. I feel comfortable enough with the care he will get there, but I think life would be 100x easier if we had a nanny. How did you find your nanny? What are her responsibilities? Her hours? My schedule is very consistent, Mon-Fri 7:30-4:30. We'd need care 7-5, which would be 50 hours/week. Do you think 2 part time nannies would work better? Did you write up a contract? If you don't mind sharing, how much are you paying?

  • I wouldn't recommend a nanny unless you know her really well.  I am a firm believer in daycare b/c you have more than 1 person responsible for your child and there is always someone watching.  Whether it be monitors or the daycare administrator or the other caregiver.  I would be eerie all day long if I didn't know what was going on in my own home with a stranger.  My sis came home one day with her 1st DD who was watched by her BF's older sister.  She let her sleep in her pnp all day long.  Which she wasn't even sleeping.  She just wasn't a crier.  The girl never fed or changed her diaper.  And if your Nanny is sick...You Have to Stay Home from work.  If she went to daycare, you'll miss less days.  You just have to weigh the pro's and con's.

  • We have a live in nanny that is an old friend of mine.  I've known her since she was 5 years old.

We are paying her 1300 a month plus room and board.  I should note I live in a very high cost-of-living area.  We did make a contract listing her work hours, responsibilities and expectations.

She will work 40 hours a week, any more than that we pay over time.

With a nanny, it's very possible to find a great one - just get recommendations and follow up on references.  However, be prepared to pay a lot more than you would for day care for a highly qualified nanny.

  • I had a nanny for both DS and DD when they were infants. I went back to work part time when DD was 9 months old.  I only worked 8:40 to noon four  days a week.  So she worked from 7:45 to 12:30, or about  5 hours a day.  We paid her $40 a day, but I also paid her bus fare monthly.  We also supplied all her food.

We found her through a friend of a friend.  One of my dad's patients recommended her.  I had 3 separate nanny cams on full time.  She was loving and took incredible care of our DD.  DD loved her so much.  She got a bath every morning before her nap. They had outside play, walks, trips to the park, and just fun.

I like a nanny for smaller children because of more one on one attention.  We moved DD to an in home day care for this school year so she could socialize more and have more interaction with children her own age.

  • We are getting a nanny and she is starting in September. Daycare for 2 babies is ridiculously expensive and a nanny is much more cost-efficient.

Look online for organizations, references/recommendations from family friends, and anything else that could work. Make sure you double and triple check each person that is going to be involved with your child.

Our nanny is going to be responsible for the twins and, potentially, light housekeeping. I just want her to focus on the twins care. Her hours are probably going to be a llittle off and on from September until February when I go back to work. She's going to be our live-in nanny.

We will be paying her about $2000 a month plus she has a room, food, and access to a car sometimes.
