Monoamniotic twins?

DH's cousin just found out yesterday at her 20 weeks u/s that she is expecting twins!  Very exciting.  She also found out that they are sharing a sac.  I did a quick google search and found some pretty scary stuff.  She also has a 1 year old and two teenagers.  I want to do something for her.  I know she will be going on hospital bedrest in the next month or so I guess so I was thinking a care package.  Good idea, bad idea?  What else?

Anyone else go through this and can explain to me what she's going to have to deal with.  I don't know about asking her all of it since I don't know her super well and I don't want to hit on any nerves, ya know?

She lives in Arizona, I live in Colorado so we can't visit and we will have to send whatever it is.

Re: Monoamniotic twins?

  • Means Identical and she is at risk for twin to twin transfusion.  Just be supporive, don't bring it up unless she does. Nothing worse than everyone telling you it is going to go all wrong...
  • So they are sharing an amniotic sac? That is great that her doctors are planning on putting her in the hospital soon. That's pretty standard for momo twins.

I think care packages for when she's in the hospital are a great idea. Snacks and magazines and things to keep her occupied. She will probably be in there for 8-10 weeks.

    Good luck to your cousin!

  • Monoamniotic pregnancies are extremely high risk because the babies can get tangled cords, twin-to-twin transfusion, etc.  Our identicals shared a placenta (monochorionic) but had their own amniotic sacs.

Since you know she's going on bedrest, I think it would be nice of you to gear a care package toward that.  Maybe include books, magazines, snacks, crossword puzzles... things that you can think of that will keep her occupied.

Very nice of you to want to help! : )
