Hlth. Ins. and miscarriage-- ugh!

Sorry if I sound naive, I'm sure this has probably been discussed here before...   but I just found out that my lovely, lovely BCBS teacher plan only covers a teeny-tiny little bit of miscarriage care.  They consider it "emergency" care even though I didn't go to an emergency room or urgent care center.

Fuckyouverymuch BCBS! Way to kick people when they're down, mofos.

ETA: the m/c was way back in January, but we're just now getting the bills.  Grrrrrr!

  • That's ridiculous.  We have BCBS...we've had issues with them as well, but the m/c thing is just sh!tty.  I'm sorry.

Can you possibly ask your OB to code it differently so that on paper it looks more like a routine visit or something like that?

I don't think he can do that after the fact.  I'm sure it would be considered insurance fraud.

I really hate that families, (and especially women)  are treated this way after all we pay into premiums.  Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

  • Those bastards.  I'm so sorry.

Not necessarily.  It all depends on how they code it.  Though I guess if it's after the fact, it would be fraudulent. :(  Sorry again!!

  • I'm so sorry...That is really crappy :(

Definitely good to know though, I would have never imagined that. I was forunate since my D&C was completely covered by my old insurance. This makes me very happy that DH's company just switched insurance and no longer have BCBS knowing this.

  • Sorry K. That sucks. :(

  • When covering my miscarriage care the insurance listed my diagnosis as "Habitual Aborter". Thanks. Like I already didn't feel sh!tty enough. I think we finally have it fixed in our ER Discharge papers where it doesn't say "Threatened Abortion" for pregnancy bleeding. It now (should) say "Threatened Miscarraige"

  • I remember I had to pay (out of pocket) over $500 for my first m/c and almost $700 for my ectopic.  I have BCBS as well.

I feel like they should be paying us.  And offering free spa treatments.

I'm sorry you are having to deal with this.

  • Boo!  I'm so sorry.  That sucks. :(

  • That's awful..I'm sorry. We recently acquired them as our health insurance provider as well when my DH got a new job. The premiums are obnoxiously high, even if we change to a different plan when the window is open. Plus, I wanted to birth at a birthing center, and they don't cover the midwives there whatsoever. Since we aren't comfortable with paying the whole thing out of pocket, we're staying w/ the hospital, though it's not what I truly want.

    Not a fan.

    I liked this comment though:
