Can I dye a bedspread?

I have a king size bedspread that is 100% cotton, and the perfect weight for summer.  The only problem is it's green.  Not dark green, medium, sagey green.

I would love to find a new one that's dark brown and will match the rest of my room, but I can't.  Can I dye the green one with the dye that you put in the washing machine?

  • You can try but it's a toss up if it will work.  If you don't care that it may not come out/get ruined then go ahead and try it.

Also is it a comforter or a duvet cover?  If it's an actual comforter with batting/filling I don't think I would bother.

  • No, it's just a thin cotton spread.  I think I'd rather keep it green even though it doesn't match, than ruin it, though.  It fits in the washing machine with plenty of space.

  • Yeah there is no way of knowing if it will work.  It might come out a weird color, the dye might not take evenly, it might work but then when you wash it it looks like a train wreck.  You just never know.
