Can I dye a bedspread?

I have a king size bedspread that is 100% cotton, and the perfect weight for summer.  The only problem is it's green.  Not dark green, medium, sagey green.

I would love to find a new one that's dark brown and will match the rest of my room, but I can't.  Can I dye the green one with the dye that you put in the washing machine?

You can try but it's a toss up if it will work.  If you don't care that it may not come out/get ruined then go ahead and try it.

Also is it a comforter or a duvet cover?  If it's an actual comforter with batting/filling I don't think I would bother.

No, it's just a thin cotton spread.  I think I'd rather keep it green even though it doesn't match, than ruin it, though.  It fits in the washing machine with plenty of space.

Yeah there is no way of knowing if it will work.  It might come out a weird color, the dye might not take evenly, it might work but then when you wash it it looks like a train wreck.  You just never know.
