I've never noticed bad fumes, but that oven is going to get extremely hot to the touch. Just beware of that, you don't want to lean against it accidentally.
ETA: because of the heat we usually do this at night when DS is in bed and we can close the cats in our room. So I guess I don't know about the fumes.

We usually remember to do ours once, twice if we're lucky, a year. It gets pretty bad. When we run it, it makes a haze in the house and smells awful. I also get a headache from it because it smells worse than just old burned food. We usually pick a nice cool day in the spring or fall, open all the windows, and go out and do yard work.
ive never noticed any fumes, Do you use a cleaner in there or just run the cycle? i run it with out cleaners-my oven also has a fan inside so im not sure if that has anything to do with the fumes.

Re: Self cleaning oven ?
When my mom did her clean cycle we always had to take all the animals and leave the house for like 6 hours.
The clean cyle is basically the oven getting to a ridiculously high temp to burn everything away. Definitely don't stay in the house.

Depends on how bad your oven is.

Our oven does a 5 hour slef clean cycle.
