Getting rid of the bottle

How did you get rid of the bottle?  Did you just go cold turkey one day?  DS is still getting breastmilk from my frozen stash.  Should I just have my caregiver start offering that in his sippie cup (instead of the bottle)?  Do you still warm it up?  How long did it take for your LO to catch on?  Right now he drinks from a straw sippie during his mealtimes- I've been giving him water at lunch and dinner and at breakfast he gets whole milk.  He's just OK with drinking the whole milk out of the sippie.

Any advice would be appreciated!

TIA!

Re: Getting rid of the bottle

  • We started giving milk in a sippie a couple weeks ago. I don't do it in the straw cup even though Alessandra prefers a straw cup because cleaning milk out of the straw would be a nightmare. I just switched from the bottle one day, and we've never looked back. Alessandra didn't have any problem with the transition. I still warm her milk because she won't drink it ice cold. I give it to her luke-warm, and I'm trying to warm it less so she'll gradually get used to drinking it cold.

  • We just started offering the milk in the sippy cup last week.  He's being doing good so far.  The first time I offered it to him he through a tantrum but after 15 min he gave in and drank it all.  I only use a sippy cup at home (morning and night time bottle).  Next week I'll let the daycare use the sippy cup for milk as well.  He only gets water/juice from the sippy cup there.

  • We wanted to wean her from the bottle and from formula, but DD had other plans.  She refused anything but 100% formula in her bottle and refused formula from the sippy.  So we just decided to go cold turkey. We were fortunate that DD didn't put up too much of a fight.  She really missed her bottle the first day without it, but by the time she went back to daycare (we started on a Friday), she was good to go.  It probably helped that none of the kids (at the time) at her daycare were taking bottles.  We also were sure to put all of the bottles away.  You know, out of sight out of mind.  Now, she's cool with giving her baby doll her bottle without wanting it herself.  :)  Good luck!!

  • We just gradually started switching bottles for sippys, then for straw cups.  We left his first and last bottles of the day for last, with the last one being the final bottle to switch.  It was so gradual, I don't think he ever really noticed the total change.  He still has a tendency to speed down his milk from straw cups the way he did with bottles, though.
