Trouble sleeping on your side?

Hey ladies.  Sorry for so many questions lately.  Just wondering if there are any of you out there that had trouble shifting to sleeping on your side.  I've started trying to do it, as I'm a dedicated back sleeper, and I'm waking up in the night with some pain in my hips.  I'm going to call my doc but just wondering if any of you had any experiences like this and had anything that worked better in terms of sleeping on your side.

Thanks,

Amy

  • boppy total body pillow. you can put it behind you and you can't turn on your back all the way but you have some padding behind you so you aren't just on your hips.

Also you can curl up with it and have some btwn your legs to help with the pressure too.

  • Yup, I had a fortress of pillows around me once I couldn't sleep on my stomach or back anymore.  I used a regular body pillow to hug and have between my legs (tee hee).  Then I had another pillow behind me so I could be on my back without being flat on my back. Once my belly got a little bigger, I also used a pillow under my belly for support.  The pillows held me in place at night so that I wasn't putting too much pressure on any one thing (back, hips, belly, etc).  It was awesome and I wish I could get anyway with it now.  But, I think DH would kill me if I tried to sleep with that many pillows without a really good excuse.  Wink

     This.

I'm a dedicated back sleeper also, and this is the only thing that keeps me slightly up on my left hip.

  • Yes - I tend to have hip issues in general so pregnancy puts them over the edge.  I use a body pillow and it definitely helps.  Also - I see my chiropractor weekly and that REALLY helps.  It's very easy for your pelvis to get out of alignment w/ the stretching of the ligaments and all the changes your growing uterus does to your body.  I've found my weekly chiro visits are the best way to handle hip and low back pain.
  • I can so relate as I am a back sleeper too. You will get more used to it over time and your body will come to prefer that. Some of the pain, like in the hips, comes and goes rather than staying consistent through pregnancy. Also, my dr. said it's cool to sleep on my back if I just slide a (regular) pillow under my butt on the right side a little to take some weight off that major artery. So I still sleep on my back sometimes with that method and it seems okay. When you get bigger though, it may hurt your lower back to do so and you will find it more instinctive to roll to the side. Good luck!

  • Thanks y'all!  OMG that pillow looks fantastic.  I have to have it!  Also, good point on the chiropractic visits.  I go to my chiro every 2 weeks now, but upping it to once a week may be a good option to bump up to.

    Thanks again!
