dairy-free birthday party menu...wdyt?

I'm being a little crazy about Jack's birthday party menu, I admit this :)  Even though he won't know if there are appetizers and such with dairy in them, it's his party and I want to stick with the idea that the food should be appropriate for him and his dairy issues.  We are having a picnic theme.

So, here is what I've come up with.  Tell me what you would change/add/take out, etc.  Thanks!

Appetizers: mini crescent rolls with pesto spread baked inside, guacamole and chips, homemade black bean/corn salsa and chips (I would like one other thing but can't think of anything dairy-free...I'm stuck and open to suggestions!)

Dinner: BBQ pulled pork and rolls, pasta salad, fruit salad, deviled eggs, baked beans

Cake and individual worms and dirt for the kids

  • Sounds perfect to me!!
  • If you want something else, a veggie tray with hummus as the dip works for me.  I usually do baby carrots, little tomatoes, and cucumber cut into sticks.

Do you think it's enough appetizers/snacks? Also, I'm so glad you got me into the worms and dirt thing! Last weekend I had mh go get the terra cotta pots and he came home with some that were larger than I would have bought but it ended up being perfect because I can fit those short 9oz plastic cups in them, so I'll make the worms and dirt in the plastic cups and then put the cups in the pots at the last minute. Also, I decorated the pots with each child's name, hot glued on some ladybug buttons, and I'm attaching a packet of sunflower seeds to take home. I'm so proud of my craftiness ;) Thanks again for your help!!

  • Sounds delicious! And we would love to come to a party like that since ds has a milk sensitivity too :).

  • Sounds delicious. I would never know that was a dairy-free menu if you didn't tell me.
  • Where did you find dairy free pesto? Everyone I've ever seen has parm cheese in it. For kids I sometimes make hotdogs wrapped in cresent rolls (add cheese for kids that can have them). You could add a fruit tray if you wanted some more snack type food :)

  • sounds good to me.  You could do a veggie tray for apps too.  With some non-dairy dressing.

Do you have a Wegmans near you? There is one that comes in a tube, in a black box and it is in the pasta aisle near the bruschetta spreads, pizza sauces and such. It was the only one I could find with no cheese in it. It's a concentrated paste, so you just use a little and add oil to thin it out. It's really good! When I get home I'll check the brand name and pm it to you if I remember. If I forget just send me a pm!

I think you definitely have enough!  We don't serve many apps at our parties because the parties are just not long enough and we always have waaaaaaaaaaay too many leftovers.

I'm so glad I could help with the pots/worms/dirt!  It was one of my finer creative moments...I don't have many!  Sounds like you have really made them cute!

  • Sounds great!

My only suggestion is that do you think all the kids would eat that stuff? My kids would, but i bet there's a lot of kids out there who've never had pesto, bbq sauce, etc.

Good point :) It's just family coming, so the kids are my kids' cousins, who are 3, 2, and 1. At any of our family functions they don't really eat the snacks, they just have some of the dinner or whatever, and I figure that they'll eat the pasta salad and fruit salad at the least. But now that you mention it, maybe I'll get some turkey for the kids, too. Thanks!

  • Does everyone coming eat pork?  Just wondering as that is the only meat main dish option.  Other than that, I think you have plenty of food and different options.  I don't think an additional appt is needed.  Sounds like a great party and I love the picnic theme idea.
