When her jammies are wet when she wakes up in the morning. When it starts leaking out the front, I know they are too small. You can just tell. If you are thinking you should go up a size, it is probably time.
I have a skinny baby, so for us it's always been when they start leaking. They always still *fit* fine, but we go up before we reach the "minimum pounds" on the next size when they start to leak.

If they are tight anywhere I go up a size, legs or waist. Also the biggest indicator for me is the wet pjs in the morning for Reed. At your little one's age, it is the poo explosion up the back and the tightness. In the front if the tabs are about an inch apart, I consider the diaper too small.
When it's a pain for me to put them on and get them positioned right OR if it's too snug anywhere on him. I think I honestly use one size too big, but he never leaks or has blow-outs. So I'll take it!
we've literally moved her up based on the weight limits. like size 2 goes up to 18lbs. And size 3 starts at 16lbs, so we moved her into size 3 when she hit 17 lbs.
we haven't yet had to go by snug waist or legs... those have been fine.
Re: Diapers - how do you know when to go up a size?
After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
