what controller medicine are they on and have you noticed any side effects? DS was diagnosed with asthma and prescribed Flovent (2 puffs, 2x daily) about 2.5 weeks ago. In the past week we have noticed a fairly dramatic change in his behavior - not listening AT ALL, rude, demanding, and defiant. He also seems to be having trouble falling asleep and acts up TERRIBLY right before nap and bedtime. This is very unlike him. He's 3.5 so obviously he doesn't always listen great and sometimes is naughty, but this is a new level and I'm concerned that its the Flovent. I've been reading on askapatient.com and it sounds like there are a lot of similar stories out there for children on this drug. I'm frustrated and confused. I know we need to control the asthma, but these side effects are not okay. I'll be calling the dr in the morning, but thought I'd check here for experiences.
Re: If your child has asthma....
it's an inhaled steroid. so it can cause irritability and such. ds took it when he had croup at 16m (yeah, with a masked aerobid chamber/spacer) . he was pretty sick at the time, so I didn't notice a big difference other than he was tired and a cuddlebug. he would get upset and aggitated after the proventil (albuteral inhaler). the last pedi on call switched him to pulmicort and routine albuterol (both are nebulizers) with his last bad cold. he was pretty sick again. he only gets asthma symptoms with bad colds. he was okay. tired. not quite as irritable with the albuterol neb vs the inhaler (although he did fight those treatments more than he did the inhaler). gotta find out which his pedi prefers. both sick visits were with a pedi on call. the one was fine with inhalers for a 16m/o, the other said no no this was just a few weeks ago (ds is 2 1/2y/o).
call and talk to the pedi. GL
Both my kiddies are on nebulizers of Albuterol when necessary but for maintenance they are on Singulair every evening. I haven't noticed any symptoms with them, but a GF of mine says her DS has the same symptoms yours does on this drug too.
Definately call the pedi and see what else you can try.
